Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

How do you run out of square tapper BBs at a shop like that? It's almost like saying they ran out of inner tubes...
I was out for sushi with friends a few weeks ago + they ran out of rice.
"The jerk store called, they're all out of you!"
Well, the upside is that after putting everything back together and taking a look at my chainline, I realized that the crap touro chainring I have on there is out of round enough that I don't think 2mm is going to make a difference. Meh.
The BB is prob. symmetric so your chainline will only change by 1mm. No prob!

Dear Faceless Masses,
You know how with Crank Brothers pedals you can clip in by pulling your foot back across the pedal in addition to the typical method of pushing your foot forward into it? Are there any other MTB pedals in production out there that can do the same thing? I'm at a loss to come up with one.
Fondest regards,
- Mike

Hehe ... I just jotted down "SAFETY!" on my wrist in the gap between my watch tanline and my glove tanline. Hopefully I'll spot that as I'm doing errands and remember to pop by.

anyone got a 17t or 16t cog and lockring for sale?
Sorry I missed the safety meeting and any riding today, but I had to head up to Peterborough on Friday night to take my G1 exit road test. Wish I had my cross bike up here - the weather is fine :)
For anyone who might be out and about this afternoon, I think I'm going to head down Taylor Creek to the Don and out to the spit. I'll be on my Nagasawa.
Well, it wasn't a bad ride today, except for the hordes with squeaky drivetrains riding in very slow packs. I rode like I'll be drinking tonight - alone.

********, that's depressing. I rode out to the bluffs and back. Lovely day today!
Depressing? I'm my own best drinkin' buddy!
Turned an awful lot of heads when I opened my car up trying to make the beer store before 5. Made it with only seconds to spare. I had the windows down and shocked myself at the howl it can make.

I got new cables this year on my bike, and now I think the rear cable has stretched and my rear derailer isn't shifting great. Is there an easy way to adjust for what's really just cable stretch?

So is it mostly just messengers who do alley cats in this city or did I just luck out with my first one? Based on everything I've seen online from other cities, alleycats seem to attract a lot more casual looking cyclists than you'd expect at a bike race. I get to the race on friday, and of a group of about thirty I'm one of maybe two or three who aren't working messengers. Is that typical here?
Not that I mind, couple of the dudes were really nice and I did ride back across the city with another dude who was showing me how to spot gaps and cut through cross traffic. I also got to see him get hit by his third car of the night, which involved getting caught in some streetcar tracks and then rear ended by a cabbie which he somehow rode out and didn't go down at all, which was a bit nuts

It's actually a particularly good one if you're into that. The AMG engineers did a nice job with the exhaust. I'm just a bit old to engage in (much) anti-social behaviour any more, so I had forgotten what it sounds like. It's also a little difficult to be a hooligan with Jazz 91.1 playing on your car stereo.

I don't think I'd be taking any riding advice from a guy that gets hit by 3 cars in one night!

Eh, I've been riding enough that I know my limits and there was once or twice I was on his wheel and he said "we're good let's go!" and I saw no gap whatsoever and stopped for traffic before going through a few seconds later. Like you said, dude got hit three times in a night after all. Some people are more comfortable getting hit by cars I guess

Ahahaha... I had a guy like this. He was riding behind me along Dundas when we stopped at Yonge (heading west). He looks at me and says, "you can't stop - just gotta go!," then proceeds to book it through the red every other red until I turned north on Beverly and lost him. lol.

The one I was driving the other day was the Kompressor I bought for my wife about 3 years ago now. My AMG is a little older, but still a joy to drive. My wife hates it. She says it's like being on a wild horse. We are planning to replace it in about 2 years, and I'm trying to convince her to let me buy a supercharged Lotus Elise. She'll hate that even more, though.

I'm not sure if anyone is into this sort of thing but I meet a new cycling club yesterday. Les Deomestiques. The difference between them and most clubs is summed up by their motto "cyclists that serve". So they're based around advocacy and charity work (usually bike related) as well as a love of cycling.
Good group of folk so I thought I'd throw out a link to them:

This thing looks pretty bad but wow, it is fun! I had intended to sell it but I rode around the 'hood with my nephew and it is too much fun. I am going to tear it down and have it powder-coated back to it's original baby-blue colour. I have too many projects already but this is a really neat one.

Yep, that's the one. My chances of being allowed to buy it when the time comes are only slightly better than my chances of winning the 6/49. She is thinking Audi TT, though. Now if I can just get her to test drive a Porsche Cayman.....

Does anyone have the Highway Act highlighting the cycling sections as it pertains to riding in Toronto?
At least one car of law enforcement officers isn't enjoying Bike Month™ hassled me for a half hour on the way to work this morning for passing a car on the left in the curb lane. He had to pull out from the curb and into oncoming on King/Jarvis and then block King going west to do this...until he moved up Jarvis a bit. After incorrectly telling me how far to the right I was supposed to be, ( I am allowed to take the lane) ,he then when on to tell me how many points he could have removed from my drivers' license. At that point I told him , ah, no Sir, you can't because I'm not driving. It's been appealed and judged on... It's on the books Sir, because it's unjust punishment because not all cyclists have dl's. Anybody have a document handy? We should all ride with a print out , and hand it to these guys when pulled over for nothing other than passing them in traffic. His main issue was that I should have stopped behind the car that was too far over to the right. Oh yea and I going to kill the woman crossing King at Jarvis, as I came to a stop with my front wheel over the stop line.
Threading.. what's the official ruling on that one? He kept trotting out motorcycles as an example... to which I kept replying I am not a motor vehicle..Sir.... and possibly we could both use a re-read of the traffic code.
So look out... he was asking about two brakes as well. Two white males in the car, youngish. Driver and instigator was bald...really likes his power. Passenger ...dark hair, shades and pretty chill, he said to have a nice day. He grinned a couple little hidden grins at my reasonably informed answers, especially when I mosdef wasn't taking his partners points talk.
So... watch out, out there. Bike Month.... YAY. Can't wait for this to be over, although I think this might be the thing that gets me out there.... even if just to inform folks , on and off bikes, what's what.

I think someone should write to the papers about how this "bike month" is such an unprepared city-wide activity that somehow just makes everyone upset...
even the cyclists!
Found this.
Apparently the city has a bylaw regarding the 'keep to the right' nonsense. Although most of these are likely subject to tremendous amounts of interpretation.

when i looked that stuff up last year i found a lot of conflicting things, between by laws, highway traffic act, etc ... it was confusing and i wasn't really able to figure out much... mostly wanted to confirm the whole "right to take the lane" thing which actually seems to not be true, but i don't know.
like you said, it's likely subject to interpretation and in any event it can probably be made to look like it's your fault
TRaffic Jammer
05-26-09, 09:29 AM
Ok..next...o the source of the bylaw.... thanks Krusty, that's the same doc I got from the City's site. Though.. it does mention the section of the highway code it references...handy. Like I said to the nice officers this morning.. you are the first squad car in 20 years to do what you're doing., and bike cops have told me I am allowed to take the lane in Toronto....especially when you feel unsafe...as long as you are being reasonable about it. So by that logic... taking the curb lane on say Queen/King/College/Dundas with two lanes in each direction shouldn't be a giant issue when conditions dictate.

Someone explain how I use torrents and download music.
Download utorrent: http://www.utorrent.com/
It is pretty easy to setup the only thing that I don't think a lot of people know is that you should have your ports change on each startup so select "Randomize Port on Startup" when you have the client running.
In my opinion, the best sites for torrents are Demonoid.com ( http://www.demonoid.com/files/) or PirateBay.org (http://thepiratebay.org/).
I think that Demonoid has an invite-only system setup and, if that is true, just PM me and I can send you one. It is a smaller site but still has incredible selection and, being small, it is better moderated so you won't have any fake or trojan torrents. There is also no pr0n on Demonoid so that keeps out the crazies and a lot of the scumware.
PirateBay is the big big one that the whole planet uses so anything and everything is there but be careful what you download, always read the comments about the torrent before you decide to download. I once downloaded a Sigur Ros album and it was instead a L'il Wayne album (I actually liked it a lot!) but I have heard of all sorts of crap being disguised as popular movies or albums in order to get people to download something illicit or harmful to your computer.
On any and all torrent sites, check how many seeders are on a torrent before you download. If there is a super-popular album and only one seeder, it is probably some sort of fake torrent. Surf the sites a bit and check out who are the more reputable uploaders/seeders and download from them exclusively.
If you are not already using Firefox, use Firefox for any and all torrent sites that you visit as it is much safer than Explorer.
