I have not had to lock up my bike for a long time - but I have to start again. I have an old Kryptonite lock and I remember there was some problem that they could be cracked open with a pen (?).
So... whats the deal with them now? I'm guessing my old lock is vulnerable. Any suggestions for good locks?
Thanks y'all.

Our university police department has run a bike-lock/registration plan for years, and there was much panic when this story broke. We give the kiddies a high-end kyrptonite lock and registration stickers for 20.00, and there are hundreds on campus.

We got together with kryptonite and they offered to replace any lock with a normal-key type for free. We posted this information generally around the campus. I think we got two requests for replacements. We have not had a single bike stolen in this manner.

I tried it, and could not do it.

You have not had a single bike stolen YET! Someone with more skills could defeat the round key lock or damage it by trying to steal your bike.

I would strong urge you to do more to inform people. Locking it with the compromised lock is the same as not locking it at all.

If you still have your old Krypto lock and a key, you can get a brand new Kryptonite lock with a different key for nothing !!

It does not matter if your lock was registered or if you have a recipet or anything like that. You do have to have a key.

Go to the Kryptonite web site, find the link and go to the page to register for the program. Be patient and they will send you an email eventually with a bar coded, pre paid shipping label for UPS. Box up your lock take it to UPS and give it to them. Eventually a new lock comes to you.

If the key to your lock is a cylinder (so the key hole is a circle) then it can be compromised with anything that will fit in the circle that is pliable yet rigid enough to roughly maintain its shape. I have seen a kensington laptop lock (using the same style key) opened with a piece of cardboard.

You're welcome. I might add I'm a happy camper, I have four new Kryptonite locks now. Be patient it takes a while. Try a forum search. There is a good thread about this where the time frame was discussed. My elapsed time is in there somewhere. I think it was around two months.

I have a Schwinn U-lock that has the round key. Does anyone know if they are recalling their locks?

If it is a Kyrptonite lock relabeled as Schwinn, I think you have a good chance. If you can tell that it is one maybe you could call Kryptonite. I read somewhere about some relabeled locks going back.

Search the forum, I think it was here somewhere.
