Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - just an idea: CHICAGO DOCK BOBBING

So my friend harley and i (nic) where thinking about buying some crappy kids bikes, attaching floaties to um (or not), and riding them off the docks/break walls into lake michigan. i remember doing this when i was a little kid into a river in the back of my parents house and it was alot of fun. so we were wondering. anyone interested in doing this with us? we could make it an event. the more people the better. anyone have any ideas to make it better? or are their laws that would prevent people from doing this?

we where thinking of dock bobbing around may 15. (i know it will be cold as hell but it will make it more fun)

I used to do that as a kid, it's great fun. Also allows you to practice really cool tricks and perfect the landings. We used to use old life jackets, you should only need 1 per bike.

I've done that before, we used old 2 liter soda bottles duct taped around the frame, and a soda bottle tied to a length of rope to find the bike if it really sinks... FUN!

Bike diving... Tie one of the horseshoe life jackets to the handlebars and pedal off the dock. I used to hit my shins jumping over the front of the bike in the air. Painful memories.

Anyone interested in some New York City Bike Diving? East River or Hudson River? What's that? No? Yeah I didn't think anyone would be.

Sounds great, the workingbikes warehouse will be open then too, so that might be a good place to go in and say "give me the cheapest working bike (no pun intended) that you have!"
I have no idea about the laws. Here's the thing: I'm guessing a lot of the good places to ride off (piers, docks) are privately owned. A lot of the open stuff is rocky. Of course, I don't know the whole lakefront. I'm sure that any kind of security wouldn't be too happy about it, illegal or not. So if you find an area thats decent without anyone around, it would probably go off without a hitch.

Just make sure the water is deep enough without any... rocks or lochness monsters.

yeah a kicker would be rad. but rocks might be a problem.

Get some of that grey foam pipe insulation and cut a length to fit over all the frame tubes. Secure with duct tape. This will make the bike float and keep you from banging yourself silly. If you want to come up north there is an awesome cement pier just south of Touhy beach. It has no rails or anything. It's weird to walk out on because of the sensation of how easy it would be to go off the edge. I can't remember how far down to the water usually. Medium, I'd say 2 to 4 feet at my best recollection. I have no clue how deep the water is. Be sure you pick a spot more than 5' deep I'd think.

Better idea, buy the kids bikes for some kids. Then they won't become giant fatasses!

Maybe you should drive down to Bloomington, IN and ride into the old quarry. The water is plenty deep, and maybe you will run into Dennis Quaid. One can always hope.
