So I commute to work on a fixie every day and then take long, hard rides (50 on saturday and 80ish on Sunday) with a road bike during the weekend. I may spruce up some rides during the week and wake up earlier, use the road bike to do hills or interval training but typically I just try to push a little to work.

All that being said could I fall victim to overtraining (because of a lack of a rest day)?

Can I get away with it if I take 2 days of the week really easy?

What if I don't ride one day altogether but do another activity (martial arts) would that be counter productive?

If you're feeling fine then keep on doing what you're doing. If you're riding hard on the weekends you'll probably want to make your Friday and Monday commutes nice easy rides.

Taking a day off for other activities is fine. The variety of exercises is good for your body. What makes you think you may be overtraining (assuming you think you are)?

Well the tricky part on the overtraining angle is your really don't know you're doing it till it happens, which I why I thought people recommend taking a day off. In my case the weekend is the only time I get to ride so I do try to push myself and the fixie commute on the week is a constant workout.

Last Saturday I was beat from a short 50 mileish ride and was worried about the next day (which was 80 miles with a constant, harder pace). Luckily I actually felt better after this harder ride but I'd rather not find out in the middle of a long ride that I had pushed myself too much in the week/s prior.
