With all the fervor of backpacks lately, I was over at Chrome's website and see that they have a new bag - the Sultan. It looks to be a response to the bags that Reload and Dank seem to be making. I like the features a heck of a lot and the padded back and straps (from the backbone) looks pretty good:

Anyone got one?

The padding on the backbone never did much for me. It felt okay when i wasn't wearing the bag, but something would always find a way to poke me.

only 7.5" deep. that doesn't cut it for a backpack, imo.

Seems to be a lot of volume and it is a large size height and width wise but agreed, it doesn't seem to be able to hold too much - not enough "height" to it. The waterproof aspect is interesting too and the styling.

i've been curious about that bag since i saw an article about it back in october. my boss was gonna go over to the chrome store to exchange a couple of their smaller backpacks for that one for me, but i didn't want to be locked into buying it if i didn't like it. i have since heard that it is pretty dope...so i think i'm gonna go check one out either tomorrow or wednesday. i'll let you know what i think about it.

OneTin - keep us updated - I'm really curious as to the practicality of such a bag.

The Chrome HQ is a block and a half from my house, but I'm always at work during their 9-5 hours of operation otherwise I'd stop by there today and check it out...

I think they are just branching out into the non-cycling crowd more. I don't mind if they get bigger as long as they don't start changing crap on their messenger bags and whatnot.

I just think that "Chrome Sultan" sounds like either a cruiser or a marital aid.

I really like the look of the new windbreaker they have for sale. I really want to get one but I think it would be ridiculous of me to do it now that (what we call) winter is over. It's not priced too bad either. And it's the same colors as my chrome bag.

Ive had the Chrome Sultan for a month now and have been really pleased. I use it mainly for trasporting my stuff to and from school and work, so most of the stuff I throw in it is relativley flat. Its super water-proof, so I dont worry when I am carrying my computer around in it. I only wish the waist strap was a little lower on it so it would fit me a bit better, but other than that I like it alot.

scan, are you saying that the waiststrap is more around your stomach than on your hips? does it take any of the weight or just needlessly hug you? oh and where do you live in bmore?

EVERYBODY needs a hug.

"Why are you squeezing me with your body like this, mom?"
"It's called a hug, Michael."

This is why I chose Dank. No unwanted signs of affection there.

it sits around my hips a little higher than i want. it still takes the load off. plus im 6'3" and have the shoulder straps super tight, i could loosen them to lower the pack a bit, but it seems to be working fine, i dont use the waist strap unless im really packing a ton of gear.

wakeuponfire, im living in bolton hill now, going to school at mica. where are you in baltimore?

What is that rolled up thingy at the top of the bag?

I like those clips though, not a fan of the zippers.

Oh, and I got no hugs from Dank either. (Im not a fan of public displays of affection)

thats the main compartment, its made of a seperate rubber peice that rolls down and velcros shut so it is completley waterproof. like the ortilieb packs,

That would be great for those days I feel like jumping my bike into the lake and forget to take my bag off.

I love tech gear. I really really do.

I saw a bag that had sealed seams a while ago that was made out of a rubber compound of sorts - I want to say patagonia makes it but I know it was somebody else.

I got the smaller Arc'teryx bag with the same roll top as the Sultan. All the zippers are rubber sealed with a little hood for the zip. I think I paid like $50 bucks for it and its practically bombproof. Ultra high tech with all the bells and whistles. I'm not even going to talk about sick their jackets are.

The sultan looks like it'd be tough to haul a set of wheels around with.

It's all about having their factory outlet in town.

not like their factory outlet prices are more affordable....
