My son has just upgraded his bike to Ultegra, and the chain wont settle on the top cog at the back. I thought it was the H limit screw that needed to be unscrewed a bit, but the chain is lined up fine. The chain keeps riding up onto the tops of the sprocket teeth. It is a new chain. Then I found that it ran smoothly if I held the derailler down. Would this indicate something needs to be done with the angle adjustment screw.

Your derailleur hanger could be slightly bent. Your upper stop "H" may need to be loosened just a tad bit more. OR, you may need to put a little more tension on your cable via the barrel adjuster.

OR, a combination of all three. I'd start with backing of the upper stop another 1/4 - 1/2 turn. Then I'd try backing out the barrel adjuster.

The reason I "think" it could be the derailleur hanger is that it shifts fine in the lower gears, but gets hung up in the upper. Take it to the shop and have them check the alignment. There is a special tool that does this quickly and if the hanger is only slightly off, they can straighten it!

Hope that helps.
