Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Suzue Promax

hey guys, i just bought one of the rear suzue promax sealed cartridge hubs for cheap on ebay. i was wondeirng if anyone had any tips or anything of the such to help me keep this thing running smooth. also, whats a good price to pay for a very gently used one? thanks, matt

I haven't been able to ride mine yet, since my front wheel still hasn't arrived.

Stupid USPS lost my front promax/open pro wheel. or it's sitting in customs somewhere.
the rear arrived almost 3 weeks ago.

If they're cartridge, all you have to do to keep them running smoothly is replace the cartridges when they stop running smoothly, no?

i bought a set for $105 total...36h built up to my track wheels. I am stoked! They seem good enough for straight track use. More on them after the season...

i was always happy with the promax wheelset i had for probably two years. i never had any trouble with them other than having to adjust the "cones" every none and then. the only time the hubs acted weird was when my house burned and alot of ash, soot, and water made its way into the bearings, the front wheel ran rough then, but i replaced the bearings and they were good as new. they are currently on a bike i built up for my dad.

Isn't the promax only available fixed/free? Or do I just not know where to look? I know the NJS without sealed bearings is fix/fix...

I bought a slightly-used rear promax 32h hub prelaced to a m13ii for $40 at a lbs. It didn't have a axle set so I picked one up from business cycles for $30. I love how smooth it feels on my villin.

yeah, only fixed/free for the SB version. biketrackking had them listed as fixed/fixed at one time, but that's some bunk info.

I rode mine through a season of rain and traintracks and they're still butter-smooth. Good everyday hubs.

anyone got a front they want to get rid of, so that I can have amatching set of wheels?

Anyone else with feedback on these??? I would really apppreciate it. I'm thinking about getting a set today (i'm kinda up in the air between these and Surly's even though I think the Suzue's are much nicer looking).

Now if I could only decide on what rims I want...

I've been riding the same set for the past five years and have only adjusted the cones. I only had to do that because my wheels don't fit in my trave case with the axles in. those silly disco stickers come off easily.

my front wheel was run over by a car and the hub still works fine.

if you do a crappy job building the wheel it will ride OK for a little while but won't stay true for long.

Probably the worst you can do is what I did: lace it up, bring it up to tension, start truing only to realize you somehow got off by a spoke and now your valve stem is in the wrong place. I rebuilt the wheel with proper lacing but the spokes had already bedded down some in the flanges leaving a superb stress riser pretty much exactly perpendicular to the axis of the spoke tension.

Still, the flanges haven't cracked with several months of riding, so I guess it's not so terrible.

i also have the promax/openpro combo on one of my bikes. have ridden two chicago winters with them with absolutely no problems. of course minus regular maintenance but even that isn't very much. the ways they'll come off that bike -- 1. i ride them to death 2. i get in a fatal hub accident 3. someone steals them (not happening). i was hit last year but only had to replace the rim.

plus you can't beat the disco-esque-ness.

well, i got mine built up(my first ever wheel build) and have been riding it like crazy, still extremely smooth, i love this hub, and may end up buying the front to match soon!

i've been riding one in the rear for a few months now and its great...i f'in love it...looks better than the surley, works better than the surley. if you can get past the stigma attached to the suzue name from the jr/basics, then get them...

I have a promax in the rear and a basic upfront, both are laced 3 cross to areohead rims. I have never had a problem.
