ARGGHH!!! Where do you find cross bikes?

I have become very interested in finding a Cross Bike. However, I can't find any to even look at my local bike shops in Birmingham Alabama. Of course, they will happily order one for me...

I will be in Washington DC on a tight schedule in a couple of weeks and can only find one bike shop near the convention center. The shope is in Georgetown and seems really upscale from their web site.

I will be in Fort Lauderdale with a rental car in May. Any shops there that may have cyclocross bikes in stock?

I would be willing to drive to Atlanta, GA.

I would really like to check out the Surley Cross Check, Bianchi Volpe, and Lemond Poprad.

Any pointers would be helpful.

Do what I did. Build it up yourself. I couldnt find any shops within 100 miles that carried any of the cross bikes I was looking at, so I ordered a frameset and build it up myself.

In Washington, DC:

City Bikes carries cross bikes by Bianchi, Cannondale, Jamis, Ridely ( I got my Surly there, but it was special ordered- they have Bianchi's in stock)
-they have shops in Adams Morgan, NW and Chevy Chase MD

Revolution Cycles (I bought my Bianchi Axis there) and the Bicycle Pro Shop (Pro shop tends to be fairly high end)

Thanks for the pointer on bike shops in DC. Very helpful. I found the Bicycle Pro Shop online, and it looked to be out of my league. I will check out Revolution cycles.

It can be a problem, especially in off season for racing.

REI carries two versions of a CX bike. I wanted to check one out (not to buy) when I was at the store and the bike salesman went to back for a while and came back and said they will never sell them here in AZ as it is 'only for snow and ice' Whatever.

The LBS's here will order them and they do carry them during/just before racing season, but try and clear out inventory before spring is over.

I just recently bought a Cannondale Cross from an REI right outside DC in VA. Man those things run big. I could barely straddle a 52. :eek:

Thanks for all of your help. I e-mailed revolution cycles and they say that they stock the volpe so I should be able to check it out while I am in town. I am staying just east of Georgetown and attending a meeting at the convention center.

They carry Fuji Cross Comp and Cross Pro, and most of them have Redlines also, which are very nice.

It might be worth your while. Capitol Hill Bikes is nice but they are not a huge shop. I would contact them to check their inventory before stopping by. Revolution is great. Good luck.

There is also Metro Service reasonably close to City Bikes. Take the Red line north towards Shady Grove, get off at the Woodley Park/Adams Morgan stop, then either take the Bus east across Calvert (35 cents plus the transfer you get at the Metro station you started at) or walk the one mile to the Coumbia Road.

No Metro to Revolution- you could take a bus to Wis and M street- not which keep going down M... (most turn up Wisconsin ave.)

From revolution, there are good bike-test areas on the Capital Crescent Trail or the C&O canal towpath, both one block from Revolution.

From City Bikes, it's a mile or so to the paths and roadways of Rock Creek Park.

Both City bikes and Revolution regularly stock cyclocross bikes, though you might want to check which models they have in your size.

Also- I recommend you also check out the Jamis Nova- not that more $$ than the Volpe, Reynolds frame, nice parts mix.

Thanks for all of the tips on Bicycle Shops.

I went to Revolution Cycles today and took an extended test ride on a Lemond Poprad down the bike path. It was great jumping curbs and going through grass on the bike. I shudder to think how my Fuji Team SL would react to those conditions. The ride was plush. The bike was not as light or fast as the Fuji, but felt more comfortable and durable.

Good thing I don't live in DC because I probably would have left the bike shop with it. Gotta save my pennys now.

BTW, the staff at Revolution Cycles was very nice and more approachable than the place a couple of doors down. I love Georgetown. Must be a blast to live there.

I have a Cannondale T700 that I'm told would make a killer, light and tight cyclocross.

I bought is new in '99 and went on one tour out west, then we had kids... need I say more?

So, the bike is mint, and I tore it down yesterday to prep it for straight bars, v-brakes and shifters. I decided that I'm not going to do that, I want a mountain bike instead.

I have all the original stuff (turn down bars, bar end shifters, cant brakes, and WHEELSET).

So, that's what I have, this is what I want.
I'm looking to ether sell the frame and all components for about $300.
Or trade for a mountian bike frame and/or components -or- a mountain bike.

what size do you ride? If its a 60cm call a shop that you are ging to be at in the future. Have them call SIBEX and they will send out a demo bike for you to try.

I couldnt find anything I liked at the LBS.....So I orderd a Surly Crosscheck
on the internet. I love the bike but Wow, do they spec out large !
A 58c seems like someone elses 62c if there was one !! The stem could
be used for a baseball bat:eek:
