I am doing the Transamerica Trail solo east to west starting mid May. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can raise some money for a charity while doing this. I've heard of peope donating by the mile but was curious if there is any organizations that organize such an effort. There is no doubt I could raise some good money and what better way to enjoy the ride then by helping someone in need along the way... Any ideas would be great! Thanks!

Hi.

I haven't raised money for charity by doing a long tour although I have done a charity bike day ride.

Dave and Maxine wrote an article with some ideas called

"Bicycle Touring for a cause - or - How to raise cash 101"

http://www.bicycletouring101.com/PlanningRidingforaCause.htm

Hopefully it's of some help.

From most of the journals I've read of people trying to raise money on a tour, you have to be prepared to organise and undertake presentations on the way. This is not as easy as it looks. It means you are dividing your energies between looking after your needs and promoting your cause. Much of the money raised on these tours in fact comes from donations BEFORE departure. While I have read many travelogue that have "donate to my cause by sending to..." I never have and never will. I get very suspicious that the money raised is in fact being used to support the rider rather than the claimed charity.
