On my 15 mile ride this morning I had a way-above average amount of near misses. I was

-Right hooked
-Almost broadsided by a soccer mom
-Run off the road by a delivery van
-Had a McDonalds wrapper thrown at me
and the worst one of all:
-Saw a Honda Civic with a baby seat in the back get T-boned by a Ford Econoline running a red light.

I was going to go for 20 miles, but after all of this, I was too frazzled to do the extra loop. What is wrong with people today?

We're like rats in a cage, or pigs in a feedlot, biting at each others' ears and tails.

no longer empty and frantic like a cat tied to a stick,
that's driven into frozen winter ****
(the ability to laugh at weakness),
calm,
fitter,
healthier and more productive
a pig in a cage on antibiotics.

As gas prices go higher...and temps warm up I am sure more people will be going after cyclists... sad but true. Motorists probably the majority of uninformed think we are getting a "free ride" without paying for a car, gas, taxes etc... They just don't get it.. Until they start having to pay a bunch more $ and can't afford their six pack... they may switch. I have a friend who can't afford to bring his vehicle up to code for inspection. He said he will be trying for a job just 5 miles away and riding a bike to work! Wow! is what I said and told him he made a good decision. I think slowly people are waking up... just takes time.

Fortunatly I haven't had too many run ins lately. I try to ride when there is less traffic when commuting to work. But that isn't always possible.

Keep Cycling!

Motorists also need to realize that cars and trucks will wear down a road much faster than bikes will. Therefore, the maintenance required to keep the roads in good condition should be placed mostly (if not exclusively) on them, not cyclists.

Later in the day I pulled it together and did the last lap, almost getting run off the road in the process.

I'd pay $5 to NY and NJ for my part of the wear on the roads as a cyclist. :D OTOH, I think NY and NJ owe me for the crappy roads messing with my bike.

I am sure the hard-core VCs will tell you there must be something wrong with your riding style or lane positioning. I simply cannot trust motorists as much as some folks do.
