I have a trip in 6 months to Paris and I'd like to know if the city is friendly towards cyclists in terms of traffic courtesy etc...

If you are asking do they have bike lanes? Yes, are they used by bikes? No, the messengers in Paris ride Vespa scooters, and use the bike lanes, it was really annoying.
I tried the Lance around the Arche du Triumphe, but gave up only because the traffic seemed too busy, and nervewracking for my liking. I bailed, and rode to the Eifel tower.
I was able to take my bike on the train without much trouble, and while I seemed to feel I was the only one on a bicycle, there were others, and you can get around. It is like riding in any other big city, just keep your wits about you.

I personally value my life enough not to even drive a car in Paris. YMMV

All major cities are bad for bikes, however Paris must be in the top 10 of 'least worst' - At least the French drivers (if not the Parisien drivers) treat bikes with respect

I have spent every summer in France for the past 15 years watching Le Tour. Last year I drove througn Paris.....NEVER AGAIN. The Periferique is hell. Those on scooters or motorbikes are very fond of kicking out at motorists who are a few metres out of line. It's bound to be easier on a bike but like most cities I don't it would be bike-friendly. As they say "There is France....and then there is Paris". The Parisians are a separate breed. Stay clear of paris and head fro Brittany....Hinault country.
