Training & Nutrition - One more question about calorie consumption

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Can it really be possible that I burn 5,000 calories in one day??? According to two different calorie counters, it is, but this seems like a huge amount. This is in a day where I ride 1.5 hours at a vigorous pace (14-15.9 mph)

is that your only exercise? If so then I would have to say no that's possible.

I do a lot of walking and my job involves moving furniture. During the day I am rarely stationary, and this takes that into account. I am still going to keep to my 1500 a day diet, it just seems like a lot.

maybe then. It really depends on your BMR and your current physical condition. For instance you would burn more calories if you were overweight than if you were rail thin.

Your 1.5 hour ride probably burns off 600 - 700 Calories... no more than that.

Fitday? They are so far off on calorie expenditures, particularly for biking, it's crazy. And if you give them your "lifestyle" then don't try to add any activities that might come under that "lifestyle". Try cptips.com for better guesstimates, but without knowing your personal VO2 max that's all it is: a guess.

On the other hand your 1500 calorie diet has GOT to be too little food. My BMR, a 5'5" woman with normal bodyfat, is 1400 cals. I bet I could burn 1500 calories staying in bed all day! With about 6-8 hours of cycling related activity plus another hour-hour and a half of weightlifting each week, I maintain my weight just fine on 2000-2400 daily calories.

I bet I've burned a lot more than that! ;)

In the past. :(

(Thought I'd get there before anyone else did)

We're going to have a little talk, Trekkie.

Then, we'll (you'll) go off the diet for Sunday.

figure 50 calories per mile at that vigerous pace. 40 if your cruisin, 60 if your hammering or on a knobby MTB.

so added up
Base metabloic rate, say a low side male average of 1700 Kcal (mine is about 1900)
Plus an hour and a half at 15mph is 23miles, thats about 1150 Kcal
So before your job or cold weather or anything else that's 2850 Kcal

I wouldn't even be asking if I didn't have a race in a week and a half that I would like to do well in.

Eat 5000 calories worth of food a day for one week. If you don't gain weight, then I'd say yes.
