I've always wanted to get a tattoo, like on my shoulder or mid upper-back. I was thinking of starting with a bike gear and then something like say a mnt outlined inside. I dunno I always get bogged down at that point. Any ideas?

I found a pic of a flaming chainring a couple of years ago.
I always thought that'd make a cool tat.

This started as my just sketching around. Problem was that I did this in around my friend (also my inker) I stepped away, come back and he was drawing on it. Next up for this is a volcano in the background, making it look like he is riding off the lava flow.

Well, let's see... tattoos can often become stretched, deformed and faded after some time so I would suggest... a chain, cables, cogs or chainrings... maybe even the tread pattern of your favourite tyres. :D

I thought an outline of the chainring and then some flames like this would be sweet!

Dang it, hit the post button too soon. The one thing I suggest think it over. Look for a photo/design you like. Be it magazine, book, poster, google image search. When you find the design you want, then the journey begins. Finding a inker that can do it properly and safely.

Fred mark on the right calf. Make sure it's from some improbably-sized chainring.

Same here. Apparently a new fashion is to cut a shape in your flesh and then put some acid in it to make it into a scar.
I personally am not a big fan of tattoos. I get enough shapes cut into my flesh from just mountain biking. ;)

Hey guys lets stay focused on the thread title, which is asking for ideas not whether you think its a bad idea. I get enough of that from my wife :D

If you would like I can draw you up some designs.
Just need to know
1. Where you want to put it (leg, arm, back) (and I am sure this is going to open up a can of immature worms)
2. How big of a design? Just give me a rough guess in square inches.
3. color or black and white?
4. You have mentioned chain ring and a bike outline, anything else?
5. would you want the outline to be of your actual bike?
If you prefer to PM me that is fine. I have been on a drawing spree lately, I can put it to good usage.
Check out the single speed/fixed gear forum, there are quite a few tatoo's there. Here is a link to a thread full of tattoo's. (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=71698)

Wow thanks for the help. First it would probably go on my delt. About the size of like these sunbursts you see alot of on shoulders. Or between the shoulder blades. Color black. I don't think I would want my exact bike since I expect to have the tat longer than the bike. Here another idea a star-shaped chainwheel overlaid with a one-piece crank...
One of my favorite rides was down the pacific coast, so I was thinking of having one of Oregon or Washingtons mnt peaks outlined in side of the chain ring. I like the flame idea but maybe a bit more conservative than in the above picture. It could appear as a sunburst at first glance and then people would see at closer inspection that it was a chainring.

I think Tattoo's need to be a branch of you, or tell your life story, I have a few Tattoo's, not bike related, and to be honest i couldn't picture myself without them. If biking was ever a such a part of my life that I wanted it with me forever, I think I would do a sprocket ripping through the skin in the back of my calf, as at one point in my life, I busted a chain, and my leg went under my bike, and my sproket did go into the back of my leg, 28 stitches later I was back together. Good Fun.

I don't get the tattoo thing... Are they "supposed" to make you tuff or something? Like I said, what are their meanings?

Varries from person to person...some people get them because they want to be tough, others like them because its a branding of some kind, some are ritualistic, others again are to represent and time frame, loved ones, something important, to always remember.
But in the end, people who get them, love them, those that don't, will never get it. I like piercings and tattoos...not sure why...but I do. I like girls who like tattoos...
the only time I don't like them is when it is for pure vanity, in the end, they will be unhappy with the tattoo...

I think DK DROP said it well. I don't have any tattoos personally though...I thought about for a while (still do). I'm a little weirded out by the tat stretching with muscle growth though...I don't even know if this is an issue, but it is what I use to talk myself out of getting one.

Tattoos are not for everyone. To some Tats are like collecting art. Just its not on the wall. The annoying thing about tats are the people that are looking for the cheapest tat. Cheap tats don't exactly mean that they are going to have quality. Its like going to the bike shop, wanting an all carbon fiber bike (be it road or MTB) and only having enough money for a beach cruiser.
I tell people to think on what they want. ONLY after they decided is when they should start shopping for a safe and capable artist. Almost any design is possible, but if you hit the artist up in a bad mood, then nothing is possible.

When I got my first tat, it took me almost 6 months before I came up with my final desighn, my second took me almost 2 years to finally finish, all my tattoo's are in places that if I where in shorts and a T-shirt you can't see any of them (Upper right arm, and a few on my left rib cage) because of the type of work I do I don't want to give the people I'm working with any opportunity to make any judgments on my proffesionalizm. I've been in the industry for a while now, so I am thinking about finishing off my half sleeve on my right arm. I agree people who are looking for the cheapest artisit will get what they pay for. I have no problems paying $200 per hour for the work I get done, being as the artist has one best artisit in CND for like 3 out of the 4 last years. Eye of the Needle in Saskatoon, great place, but I've always wanted to get work done with Pat Burke, at Rights of Passage too, I hear he does great work, for anyone in the Saskatchewan area.

Well 3 years isn't too long to wait for a reply is it? Well In July of 2007 I got my first tattoo, and now I have both shoulders, one bicep, across the top of a shoulder and one pec covered. Like you they can all be covered with a t-shirt. Really glad I finally did it. Only regret is having to wait so long to do it in the first place.

I saw someone with a tatoo like that once. I thought it was a perfect grease imprint just like one would get by brushing against the chainring, until I noticed it was the wrong color.
I'm not in to tatoos but if I ever got one it would be a life-sized Mosquito on my shoulder, so that people would come over to me and do me the favor of "killing" the mosquito. I'd constantly have people slapping me on the shoulder. It'd be great!
