Touring - Old Man Mountain Ultimate Lowrider Problem

I just purchased Ortlieb Roller Classics front panniers, and the Unltimate Lowrider front rack from Old Man Mountain. My local bike shop installed the rack. Everything is good except for a major hitch. One side of the axle/skewer supplied by Old Man Mountain juts away from the wheel a bit too far. As a result, the back of my panneir rubs against it sometimes. I can tell that this will eventually wear down the pannier. Has anyone experienced this? I'm starting to wonder if my bike shop installed it incorrectly. Thanks.

i was looking at those racks for my bike. doesn't the Ultimate LowRider attach in other places besides at the skewers/hub. i see that their Cold Springs and Sherpa come with the skewer attachment (http://www.oldmanmountain.com/Front_Rack.htm) but the LowRider appears to mount in other places. i realize this doesn't help with your issue, but maybe you didn't get the rack you thought you were buying?

is it possible to use other skewers? i know that there are some that are more flush than others. there are also the kind that are not quick-release, but use an alan to remove the wheel. i have these for my commuter bike to try to prevent thieves from taking my wheels easily.

Which side of the quick release is the problem? If it is the lever side, you might be able to replace the quick release with another one that has a lower profile like URL=http://www.thethirdhand.com/index.cgi?id=989445710005&d=single&c=Hub&sc=Skewers&tc=Rear&item_id=JY-103]this[/URL]. Since the OMM quick releases are long, you might try a rear quick release in its place.

If it's the nut side that is the problem, you could replace the nut with either a lower profile one or something like this (http://www.thethirdhand.com/index.cgi?d=single&c=Hub&sc=Skewer%20Parts&tc=&item_id=UP-QN1&id=989445710005) (sorry no picture). This nut is actually a bit higher profile then a standard nut but it also has a very large rounded end that wouldn't wear as fast.

If it is the threads that are through the nut, you can use a hacksaw to cut them down so that they don't protrude past the nut.

If all else fails, get some foam pipe insulation and cover the quick release to pad it so that it won't wear through the bag. Not real elegant but it would work.

It sounds like the extra long skewer that comes with OMM racks is just sticking out a bit. This is easily fixed by just cutting it back so it is flush with the skewer nut. The OMM skewers come extra long to fit through the mounting brackets, your fork, and your axle.

Thanks for the info that you (and cycoommute) provided about this. Actually, my local bike shop hacksawed the skewer a few days ago, and now everything is OK.

BTW, I had already received information quickly regarding this matter from Mr. Channing of Old Man Mountain. You're right: he is very helpful. Tis a shame that not all businesses who take our money treat us like the folks at Old Man Mountain. Good job.
