Bicycle Mechanics - Frozen BB lockring...

...anybody have any special tricks to share? Its an old hi-ish quality suntour BB, with six slots for the bb toothy wrench jawn. I've been using the aforementioned toothy wrench jawn, but I can't get a very good fit, and the thing is quite tight.

Use liquid wrench and try again.
Also ues a threaded rod with two large washers and two nuts to hold the tool in the slot while you turn it.

I'll probably get flamed for saying this, but I've gotten off lockrings with nothing more than a screwdriver and a hammer. Just tap it loose, no need to wail on it unless its REALLY stuck. I've serviced a couple of BB's that way with no problems.

Yea, if you don't care about damaging the chrome then a pipe-wrench will work too.

lockrings can be removed with pipe wrenches. IVe done it without issue, theres lots of creative answers to this :)

All I can say is that if you're having this much trouble with the lockring, wait until you get around to the other side. You're likely to find out why it's called a "fixed cup". You're likely going to need a long bolt or a piece of theraded rod or something similar to hold your BB tool tightly in place while you wail on it.

The old trick to remove the "fixed" cup is to clamp the thing in a vise, and use the frame itself as a wrench.

Liquid Wrench is good stuff; a bit of judicious tapping with a hammer makes it penetrate better.

I too have used drift-punches, chisels, screwdrivers, etc., all whacked with a hammer. If it gets too bunged up, any decent bike shop should have a few lying around in the old parts bin.

By pipe wrench, ydo you mean strap wrench? I have found one of those invaluable in life.

I've removed a seized lock ring, a headset lock nut with damaged threads, and installed a new shower head. Allows you to do the job without the marring effects of metal wrenchs.
