I got a 2001 GT Avalanche 1.0 for about US$ 588, brand new.

I am in Taiwan and Taiwan is a major export country of bikes, thus this bike is assembled in Taiwan and not in US.

Do you think this is a good deal or should I have checked out other selections too?

Sounds like a good deal to me. Pricepoint (a US mail order company) is selling the same bike for $700.00, however the LBS' still have the 1.0's for around a grand.

I have always liked the feel of GT's triple triangle bike, one of my old riding buddys had a great Zaskar, it felt fast coasting down to 7-11 :)

My friend is getting a Giant frame tonight( I can't remember the model name). It's cheaper than GT Avalanche, but to me , the Avalanche is still too heavy.

I had a Giant Warp DS-2( first generation, can't remember the year) and it was damn heavy, about 14.5 kg without add ons. I still don't know the actual weight of the Avalanche but I was hoping to get a lighter bike. Well, the price moved me.
