Bicycle Mechanics - nipples!

hey all you wheel builders out there, im getting a wheel built up, i have all the correct spoke lengths. but i have some velocity deep V rims, i was wondering if you needed 16mm nipples for that, or can you use 12mm thanks in advance. oh and if i need 16mm, why? the nipples are set down in the bottom of the inside, so why would i need to do that.

I just built up some Deep V's with 12mm the other day, it worked but I would have liked to have 14mm for better engagement. Sometimes the backside of the spoke wrench would hit the "ridge" on the rim. So i would see if you could go for 14 or 16

I am a huge fan of Velocity rims.
I agree with the comments of Pcow2.
However, I would caution that longer nipples may affect spoke length selection.

I build just about everything with twelves. The only exception is the Mavic tubeless rims. The insert is so deep you can't use anything but a 16mm.

I just ran a spoke down into a 16mm nipple. It stops about a mm before coming out of the backside of the nipple. A typical spoke calculator is supposed to give you a length that will fully insert into the nipple for best thread engagement. There is some variation but if you want to use the sixteens knock about two to four mm off of your spoke length.

Your only advantage, in using the longer nipples, is the wrench is less likely to touch the rim while truing.
