General Cycling Discussion - Can of Air??

I remember seeing a thing for car tires a while back for people that got flats .. it was a can of stuff that inflated the tire enough to basically get home. Anyone ever tried of of these on a bike?

Why would one carry a can when you can carry a small CO2 setup with a 16 gram cartridge which will inflate a 700x23 tire to 120 pounds?

You are talking about a product called "Fix A Flat". It is a pressurized can containing sealant and a compressed gas. It works well for small holes in low pressure bike tires and fits in your bottle cage. If you have high pressure tires it will not work at all.

Yeah it's called a mini pump.

They do make a Fix-A-Flat for bicycle tyres. It only works to 50PSI though. I personally would just carry a spare tube or patchkit and a pump or CO2 inflator.

Anyone ever tried of of these on a bike?

I've used them many times on 20" and some large 26" tires. When that's all you have, thats all you have.

I have a can my wife takes with her on her short, solo rides. She's never had to use it, and she's off the bike until after the baby is born and she's healed. I've carried it while riding my tubulars, but never had a need to use it. I carried my CO2 as well to get the pressuere up.

This stuff has a lot of goo in it that will add significant weight to your tires.

Fix-a-flat also contains a solvent which dissolves some of the rubber in the tire to seal the hole. Unfortunately, with a bicycle tube, the rubber in the inner tube is much thinner and therefore more likely to dissolve completely :eek: :eek: leaving you with not only a flat but with a sticky gummy mess where you tube used to be.

CO2 works better.

It seems that it would be messy too. I wouldn't want to have that stuff all the inside of tires and rims. :eek:

Fix-a-Flat has a bicycle version in a smaller orange can. The auto version is in a yellow can.

Bought a can of something called seal 'n flate to have as a quick fix for xc racing. Willing to toss the tube afterwards. Good idea or not?

I toss the tube after a flat anyways...patches don't work long term for me.

I ride with slime in my tires. after spending the entire 2004 season getting a flat every
15 miles, or so it seemed (much cursing from me, heavy, resigned sighs from my ride partner) upgraded to schwalbe tires and slime in my tubes!!! have had no problems since.
