Bicycle Mechanics - Sheldon Brown's Cribsheets

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've put up a series of "cribsheets" with Frequently Needed Numbers.
http://sheldonbrown.com/cribsheets
It is my hope that these will be a handy reference for folks in the trade and advanced home mechanics.
There's nothing here that doesn't appear elsewhere in my Website, but these pages are designed to be more concise and more printer-friendly than other materials on my site.

Thank you kindly sir. I've referenced your site countless times both in my time here on BF and while working at the shop. Thanks again for all your hard work.

Thank you Mr. Brown! I have already received great information and inspiration from your website.
Sheldon, you may not be a god but you do share one thing with deity.....

Thanks. Your tire chart may help folks avoid something I experienced. I bought an old three-speed bike with 26 inch tires. When I tried to change a flat, the tire would not come off the rim. A mechanic at an LBS in my neighborhood had boasted to me that he seldom used tire irons...he could remove almost any tire just using his bare hands.
So, he grabbed the tire with his bare hands. Would not come off. Then, standard tire irons. No luck. Thirty minutes of swearing and sweating using every tool he could think of to get the tire off. Turns out that some prior owner had somehow put a 26 x 1 3/8th tire on a 26 x 1 3/8th rim...except it was a ISO 590 tire, mounted on a ISO 597 rim. Seven painful millimeters of error.
Having a tire chart handy can be VERY helpful when dealing with the myriad of "almost" identical size tires.

I was going to say that it would be a good place to put the online gear calculator too, but I could not duck the incoming slings of outrageous rotted fruit fast enough. (It's yet another great service for us unworthy of such bounty).
Doh, here's comes a tomato(e). [duck, you hucker!]

Thanks Sheldon- you are really amazing. I have used the info on your site a lot- The wheel building instructions were particularly useful. The online order for wheel building tools from Harris cyclery was also very promptly and efficiently dealt with.
If you are ever in Munich I will take you out for several
Who the hell's this Sheldon Brown dude, anyway?
:roflmao:
Actually I think it's mcavana we've got to thank for rekindling Mr Brown's interest in the forums.
Thanks, O Bearded One. :D

Thankyou Sheldon, I've learnt so much from your site already and it has taken the pain, literally, out of my return to cycling.

Yes thank you.
Before I found your site I had no idea how interchangeable and compatible most bike parts really are. If I had kept listening to the guy at the local bike shop, with his "Why would you want to do that? Oh thats an old size, won't work with anything, so buy these new upgrades." mentality, I would not have found the true joy that is tinkering with bikes.

Funny. There was another Sheldon Brown on this site, and his signature said something like, "No, not that Sheldon Brown."
I've spent hours reading your site. Cool that you're here or back or whatever. Thanks for everything.

I think he's a Sheldon, and signs it "Not that Sheldon," but he's some color other than Brown....

Sheldon Pink: How about if I'm Sheldon Purple? That sounds good to me, I'll be Sheldon Purple.
Joe: You're not Sheldon Purple. Some guy on some other job is Sheldon Purple. You're Sheldon Pink!
Sheldon White: Who cares what your name is?
Sheldon Pink: Yeah that's easy for you to say, you're Sheldon White, you have a cool sounding name. All right look if it's no big deal to be Sheldon Pink, do you wanna trade?
