Commuting - The HEAT

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This week, after an unusually cool introduction to the summer season :) the HEAT settled in like an oven...
This morning was great! 78 and calm, a bit humid. But 4:30 p.m.?
The worst part is sitting over the "cooking element" itself (asphalt,) waiting for a light, surrounded by heat-generating, exhaust-belching motorcars. Phew!
I'll be taking the scenic, shady neighborhood routes as much as possible when it gets like this.
Excuse me while I complain some more... I'm not used to the heat yet and I felt like Superman in a vault full of Kryptonite (not the lock.)
I'm going to have to resign myself to a slow ride home in the afternoons. Easy does it!

Yeah, hard to adjust to summer when you have a week in the 40's, then one or two days in the 90's, then back to the 60's....weird weather, this year...

Due to my weird schedule, I have several shifts that begin at 3pm. This would mean I will be riding through the hottest part of the day.
Hopefully, I will be in better shape before it is really hot.
I want to stay committed to bicycle commuting, so I want to tough it out through the heat.

Just remembered.
Fill a hydration pack full of icewater, heavy on the ice (full). I remember riding home one day in sweltering heat, fully prepared...hardly wanted to drink! The darned thing kept me so cool, sitting on my spine!
:D
(Time to irrigate my hydration pack with bleach water.)

I got a dose of that yesterday myself. It didn't really hit me as hard as I had imagined and rather enjoyed the sweat. But, it came early for Atlanta and now I'm concerned about one HOT summer here.

Ditto here in the Big Easy. After a couple of weeks of wonderful, unseasonably cool weather, summer moved in like a slap in the face with a mop dipped in hot water. Fortunately, while riding I am making my own little built in breeze. At least that's what I keep trying to convince myself.

...Concentrate--"it's a cool breeze, I can feel it now..." :D
A hot breeze is better than no breeze, well, sort of.
It's days like yesterday that I really like to confuse the general motor-commuting public by answering their sincere queries as to whether I knew it looked like it might rain as follows: "Rain? Gee, I REALLY hope so!"

Even here in Sweden the summer has exploded in 25 degrees Celsius in the afternoon and 14 degrees Celsius in the morning making the commute nice. We have souch contrast here between winter and summer, so when summer finally arrives it feels really good. Ofcourse the big contrast makes every season beautifull in itīs own way. Same weather without contrast all year would be boring in the end. Happy Summer to you all...
Summer greetings

It's not the heat, it's the HUMIDITY.
I hate when the air is so heavy that breathing becomes a chore. Went for a run last night (didn't have enough time for a worthwhile ride) and felt like I was swimming through the humid air (or maybe I was swimming through all the perspiration). It's only the beginning of summer! It felt like 85 F outside last night. Just need to get used to it again.

We had summer on Saturday. It was even warm enough for shorts, but now its back to mild damp breezy English summer. Still, Im not complaining. Its quite a pleasant climate for riding.

One thing I may do after becoming independently wealthy is to have a summer home in England!
