Classic & Vintage - Peugeot "Nice" - any info

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Someone gave me a red Peugeot that has "Nice" across the top tube. I googled till I couldn't google any more and can't seem to find any info on this bike. Tube has "Reynolds 501" label on it, brakes and gears are Shimano, I had to put new tires on it.
This particular bike has been sitting in storage for 10 years, possibly as many as 12 or 13. I'll post some pics after I get it cleaned up. Anyone have anything on it? Just wondering what it may have sold for new, when it was made, etc. Any info welcomed!

I don't know, but I rather suspect that "Nice" in this instance refers to the French city. Given that it has 501 tubing, this would seem a "nice", but not a "great" bicycle. T-Mar or Pogue can almost certainly tell you more.
Yes, Nice is a nice place, but I can't get excited about 501 tubing. Howeve,r if you are looking merely for a decent beater or transportation bike, you could do alot worse.
Circa 1987-1990. Low mid-range, sport/touring model that sold for about $400-500 US, depending on the year. The ones I've seen have had Shimano Sport LX components on them.
You can get a better idea on the date via the serial number. The first digit should indicate the year of the decade.

501 is pretty good for bigger riders, but 531 is way better (personal opinion here). I believe 501 tubing would place the bike at 1984 at the earliest, so you likely avoid a lot of problems-- the bike is probably English threaded. I am not familiar with the model.
I've got a 1984 Trek 560 made out of 501 I have Frankenbiked and use as a beater (if shimano 600 brakes and wheels, cinelli bar ansd stem, simplex retrofriction shifters and Suntour cyclone mechs count as a beater). Like it a lot.
note: last paragraph edited to correct my own stupidity.

T-Mar is exactly right. I bought my Nice in 1987 for just over $600 and am now looking for a sticker set. It's sturdy and fast enough for me. I have over 2500 miles on mine and I love it. I just recived an old 600 groupo and am looking to rebuild, if any one knows where I can find a sticker set please let me know.

Try contacting eBay seller cyclomondo. He may have the art for these already (do you mean the 501 decals, or the other ones? - which I think he's less likely to have), and is a reliable seller of decals. There's also a BikeForums member who has piped into the Classic & Vintage Forum several weeks ago. I don't recall his name without researching it, but I think he has posted in some of the painting threads.

Beginnig in 1986 Peugeot began naming their bikes after mountain or mountain 'passes'. City names didnt begin until at least 1988. In later years when they werent marketed by alpha-numericaly (PH10) (PX10) they still carried the alphanumeric code on the little 'sticker'.
Examples:
Ventoux (PH501) Mountain in France
Avoriaz (P8) Ski resort in France
Galbier (PGN) Mountain pass in France

501 is fine with me. It's a "bit" heavier than 531 but also stronger from what I've read? I have three bikes made with it, and I happen to think it's a decent tubing. My PH501 with Shimano 105 is a pretty sweet ride IMHO. If it was free, even better!!,,,,BD

An '88ish Peugeot Nice that I flipped on CL last year. Had Suntour Cyclone and Sakae FX drivetrain with DiaCompe brakes, all done in white. Frame was 501 but the forks were unmarked, probably straight gauge cromo. Nothing at all wrong with the way it rode or handled.

501 was for people who wanted something that said Reynolds and had a 5 in it, but cost less. It's not a bad tubing, and a bit lighter than carbon steel, but was definitely the poor relation.

Doesn't make me like my Trek 560, 830, or PH501 any less, however poor it may be.,,,,BD
