You'll wish it was longer, seriously. As for Inagaki, make sure to watch *his* CHUSHINGURA (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055850/usercomments). Its a film that brings me to tears every time I watch it. Many famous actors have small parts. Mifune, Setsuko Hara, Yuzo Kayama, Reiko Dan, and many more faces that I can't put to names. I'll have to watch it sometime this week...

Last week's netflix disks were:
1) BSG S2 Disk1: loved it
2) Transporter 2: I was expecting a brain dead action flick. The movie actually exceeded my expectations for crapiness. Loved it as a comedy. Hated it in every other way possible.
3) Ed Wood: Couldn't get into it.
This week will be: BSG S2 Disk 2, disk 3, and lady and the tramp for my 2 1/2 year old.
DOOM ~ Great shoot 'em-up Sci-Fi, terrible injustice to the video game.
Dead Man w/ Johnny Depp. A NetFlix review said "If you don't like long drawn out metaphors, you won't like this movie." I'm still trying to figure out the metaphor.

Criterion's new release of Ugetsu is a great intro to Kenji Mizoguchi.
...
Where can I find more Mizoguchi????I have Ugetsu in my Netflix queue and 47 Ronin is at the local video store. But I can't find anything else, and he's directed around 80+ films.
Link I got off Kinema Club Japan said the Holy Trinity is Ozu, Kurosawa and Mizoguchi. I already have a ton of Kurosawa and Ozu in my queue and am familiar with them--but I can't find anything, but the two films mentioned above, from Mizoguchi.
:(
(I can't wait for more Ozu stuff from Netflix!!! )

Most of the ones that I have that have not been released yet in DVD are in VHS--all old but still servicable. There are a few R2 DVDs from GB, but I might wait for the R1 releases of those titles. You can get a copy of THE TAIRA CLAN here (http://www.kurotokagi.com/), in the Samurai section.
Its fustrating if not infuriating--such a great director with a fantastic body of work. I just watched SANSHO THE BAILIFF a few nights ago. You might want to watch Inagaki's CHUSHINGURA before tackling THE 47 RONIN. The latter has often been reviewed as slow, which it is, but if you know the story his version is very interesting in how it was portrayed given the time period in which it was produced. The framing and lighting in the opening scene are sublime. I was so luckyto get my own copy of now OOP THE 47 RONIN. They are now selling for about $200. ea.

bleh, I hate VHS
grrr--I noticed a lot of Ozu's stuff is only available on VHS as well :(
luckily a lot more Ozu stuff is in the process of getting released on DVD, via Tartan and others--unfortunately Mizoguchi stuff still isn't :crash:
very frustrating
