The Marriage of Maria Braun | Rainer Werner Fassbinder
Part of the Criterion Collection 'BRD Trilogy' of Fassbinder films (three film dvd set with supplemental disc and booklet), they all take place during post WW2 Germany. Veronika Voss and Lola are the other two films. The supplemental disk and booklet are pretty sweet too. Had this for almost a year, but I've been too busy to sit down and watch them.

Bullitt with Steve McQueen last night... boy what a slow and boring movie. Maybe it was all the rage in 1968, but yawn!
Tonight or soon will be Magnificient Seven, also with Steve McQueen and others, like Yul Brenner, Charles Bronson... based on the Samurai movie.

Wes Anderson also directed Bottle Rocket and Rushmore, Rushmore was his first studio film. Bottle Rocket is good, but it's the odd one of the bunch and doesn't have the same attention to set design/costumes that his last three have had.
T2 (liquid metal) tonite. Just to throw out a few all-time favorites as well...
Dead Poets Society (Robin Williams was fantastic, as were all the young actors)
Chinatown (Launched Jack & Faye -- a classic script)
Bourne Identity (believeable action thriller perfectly suited for Matt Damon)
Mash (Far better than any of the shows ever were)
American Beauty (the sick truth about the real America in film form)
The Professional (best movie Natalie Portman ever did and she was only a little kid)
Good Fellas (don't tell me this was not a major inspiration for the Sopranos)
2001: A Space Odyssey (even today the story and effects never seem dated)
Apollo 13 (history from when we as a nation really were interested in space)
The Right Stuff ( when men were men and not "metrosexuals" )
ALL the Harry Potter films ( for tday's kids what Star Wars was when I was a kid)
Watched Aviator last night....goes for so looong, 170 minutes to be exact.
We're all going to watch "Strangers on a Train". I can't wait!

I still love "The Birds". I never knew birds would freak me out as much as that movie made me freak. I also love "The Man That Knew Too Much". Doris Day singing Que Sera Sera was a highlight for me. But I really like Doris Day anyway...

Be Cool | F. Gary Gray
Wow, this was pretty bad. I read the book about 5 years ago, not my favorite Elmore Leonard book--but pretty good.
I liked the Italian Job and thought Gray was a decent director. He's definitely a "director-for-hire" as opposed to an auteur--and he was way out of his element with a genre piece like this. I really wish they could've gotten Sonnenfeld (Get Shorty) to helm this one as well.
Uma Thurman looks great, as always. Not her best role, but she did what she could given the material. Something very unique about her look.
Six Feet Under. Working my way through the second season.

Six Feet Under. Working my way through the second season.
I really like SFU, Alan Ball is brilliant--loved American Beauty too. I hope he writes some more films.
No matter what the situation is, no matter who the character is--there is always something "going on" in the background. That line from the Thora Birch character, (when she's about to run off with Ricky) "...And we'll always be freaks and we'll never be like other people..." pretty much sums up Ball's writing style to me. He shows -everything-
Our cable company just started running commercials for the second season--looks good (although I'm not paying for HBO, will wait for DVD).
After seeing American Beauty I wondered who the genius was, Sam Mendes or Alan Ball? After seeing Road to Perdition and Six Feet Under, it's obviously Ball.
SFU, my favorite too. Crap I missed Monday nights show.

I think Ziggurat mentioned 39 Steps, but I'm intoxicated so maybe I was seeing things. My mom used to scare the crap out of us(me and my brothers) by quoting from that movie. "Slowly I turn..." She would form her hands into claws as she turned around. Creepy, man....
Just watched Elf. Wasn't quite as good as I had heard, but I did laugh out loud here and there. I've definitely seen worse.

Honestly, I remember the line from an Abbott & Costello movie, and one of the "Road" movies.
Always in a prison or some sort of cell. Old prisoner "Slowly I turned, step by step, inch by inch" and then proceeds to attack Lou or Bob. Cracks me up everytime.
[edit] I forgot the three stooges also "Gents without Cents" Moe says it to Curly

Yeah, I looked it up, and(if the internet is to be believed) it seems to have started as an old vaudeville act. I Love Lucy also made use of it. Always creeped me out so I somehow associated it with Hitchcock.
I'd like to watch The Chronicles Of Riddick tonight seeing that I've had it since Christmas.

I hadn't realized that, thats John Cleese's real wife in Fawlty Towers.(gotta love EW)
My Dad was a Fawlty Towers fan, he loved it. I only catch it at times on BBC america, but rarely.
