The Virgin Suicides | Sofia Coppola
Sofia is brilliant--she understands how to bring everything together--a 'director' in the truest sense of the word. And she understands art and music, modernity, etc (although High Octane was somewhat of an immature show, you could tell at the time [ten years ago] that she was paying attention to the right designers/artists/musicians/etc.).
The 'score' from Air (which is better than Talkie Walkie, imho), perfect visual aesthetic, a story based on Eugenides' book.--Brilliant film, I liked it much better than the first time I saw it (but since then I've seen Lost in Translation, so maybe I simply paid more attention). I've got Eugenides' new book Middlesex, should be good.

Batman Begins | Christopher Nolan
One word? Wow. I have so many thoughts on this right now--might write something up later. Completely makes the embarassment of the Schumacher films irrelevant, and avoids many of the Burton films' faults (ie turning comedic camp into serious camp, 'bat-everything' iconography, carciatured characters (Pfeiffer, Walken, Nicholson, DeVito, etc). Not quite 'Batman cinema verite'--but about as close as you can get with the genre. Krylon Batman--RAWR!!
Open Water - Based on a true story. Throughout the whole movie you see two people left stranded in the middle of no-where in the pacific ocean by accident and left to die. It the end it was too late to save them. The sharks got them.

I recently began getting into Jean luc Godard, the legendary French New Wave innovator, 80+ years and still going. I experimented with some of his major films from different periods, most noticably, his New Wave period, his divergent Maoist period, his reimmersion experimental period, and his recent philosophical based period.
I began with Bande a Part, Band of Outsiders and Breathless. Saw Alphaville. Then Weekend, Made in USA, and Tout Va Bien. Then Numero Duex. Now I'm plan to buy Notre Musique.
That's a pretty good course for Godard, of course you need much more to really study this unique visionary. I would recommend, though have not seen, Pierrot Le Fou, Hail Mary, Contempt, and La Chinoise.

Criss Cross DVD
Working man Steve (Burt Lancaster) can't get his ex-wife out of his system, even though she is no good.
This black-and-white film was shot in Los Angeles about 1949. It's a great story about a nice guy who can't let go of a bad girl.
In the opening credits, they do an aerial shot of Los Angeles from a helicopter, back when a shot like this was cutting edge. The film shows shots of the original Los Angeles Bunker Hill residential community and East Los Angeles.
East Los Angeles was once a heavily Jewish community. "Who could believe it? Such things. You never know," to put it in the vernacular. The movie also shows a shot of downtown Los Angeles when the traffic was almost non-existent. What happened?
Besides that, the film has a great story for those old enough to wonder about the desire a man has for a woman who is the worst possible choice. So, this isn't for the young--but maybe it should be.

Out of the Past DVD
This is the original version of the remake Against All Odds that starred Jeff Bridges and Rachel Ward. But the story line in the original is substantially different. The only part of the script that is the same is that a bad guy gets dumped by a girl he loves and he hires someone to find her.
But this original film, black-and-white, 1947, is much more of what they call le film noire. In this picture, Robert Mitchum finds the right girl, but before he can marry her, he gets dragged back into his past with the wrong girl he was hired to find, a stunningly beautiful Jane Greer. To put it in today's language, Jane is really hot, a real turn on. But don't expect sex shots. They indicate sex happening by a door opening. Everybody must have been acquainted with Freud back then.
But the right girl, played by a sweet Rhonda Fleming, though not as sexy, makes a reformed Mitchum truly happy. Can Mitchum escape his past? The movie also stars a very young Kirk Douglas. This isn't a real violent shoot, 'em up. It's about men and women and good and bad. People used to care about those things, and if you do, you might like the film.

Karldar, I believe it was. The most frustrating thing about catching up on theses older movies is there is no one to talk to about them. I get to work and I am all excited because I saw Jaws(or Seven Samurai, or whatever) and the one guy has no soul(Another story) and the good guy has no idea what I am prattling on about. At least he is good humored about it.

Yeah, I am constantly amazed by the guys/girls at work who have no idea what I'm talking about when it comes to music/movies. Most of them are only a few years younger/older than me, too.
saw 2-----definitely worth a look
chicken little---suprisingly good, may beat lion king
two for the money--decent, rent it
doom---rent it
derailed---worth a look, it was entertaining
revolver---worth seeing in a theater
edison---another good morgan freeman movie
for those above talking about jaws, you oughta see the unofficial directors cut they redid a few years ago and released, its way better than the TV or original version, I got it as a promo item from my video store buddy
Just watched "The Notebook" totally a chick flick and definately a tearjerker, but a very good movie.

That movie scared the bejesus out of me, tho. I was only 4 when it came out, but my parents took me to see it at the old drive-in when I was a little older(8-9?). Jaws and Alien. Man, those two inspired some nightmares, lemme tell ya!
