Many of us Forum members live in So. Cal...Los Angeles Media stretches from Santa Barbara to San Clemente...After crossing the US in a car...US commercial radio stinks. A music/entertainment wasteland. That is reality...One city in 15 might have an independent radio station, where the playlist is free of censorship...Most play just the top 40 that enhances commercials...Music is the filler.
In San Diego we are lucky to have one independent music oriented radio station...Where I live depending upon conditions- we can recieve both LA and San Diego radio..
My independent San Diego station plays stuff like David Byrne, John Butler Trio, David WIlcox, Dishwala, Finn Brothers, 10,000 Maniacs, Dave Matthews, Van Morrison, Match Box 20, Del Amitri, Counting Crows, Bruce Hornsby, Shaun Mullins, Shaun Colvin, Joss Stone...What a list.
LA..On the other hand..I only hear Top 40 if that...The only station where they have a DJ that plays something different is Jim Ladd of KLOS...
On my car radio..I have six button stops..Radio is so awful in LA..Three stops go to the same station..!
LA people ..Have I missed something by not using my scan button..What is your favorite LA station. Is there an independent station in LA...Not just one that has two hours per week dedicated to something different...But around the clock. Anyone remember the Autrey Independent station...KSCA the old 101.9.Since it left, there has been no replacement.
To help define the kind of music that gets my ear...I like the kind of music movie's select for mood setters...One example..How many are familiar with Keane...The band will be in Palm Springs...Their new song...."Some Where only we Know." Great song..like to be there...Without independent radio or Movie music who would ever know..

I do listen to classical some...Give this a try...Better than Kansas repeats for empteen times a day..
The reason for this post...Maybe I have not scanned into something worthwhile. Often Public stations play adult alternative on like Saturday nights...But, when they do it often includes the likes of Nepalese Sitar music...I am looking for adult alternative as I outlined...Nothing against Nepalese Sitar music...
travlin guy..Did you bring your bike to LA...Think we have better bike access than Miami.
ps- no responses..hope that does not mean the LA radio is worse than Miami's. Certainly the music scene is not.

I agree Karl. Jim is slightly stuck in the past..But, he is one of the few who does something other than top 40...At least, His playlist must be 440, even if he could better appreciate, the fact that music did not die after disco.
He does call his show 'free form' -that is something and a favorite of his is Petty's "Last DJ."

Riding in So Fla is disgustingly repetative here, hills are the bridges over the intracoastal canals or the Grove to Key Biscayne which can be nice, or down to Key West on the o'seas hwy, or around Lake Okeechobee.

Radio here is mostly programmed for mid teens even PRI gets boring, some of the latin stations can be fun at Sat nite parties
I took my bike to CA. last fall rode SF to Malibu on PCH a life long dream had PERFECT weather ,about 10 days only down side was I left my new dig cam on my back rack after snapping some pix at Monterey, got on bike, forgot about camera and, SHAZAM,it fell off without my noticing its demise
Am planning a move west from Fla later this year maybe Oregon hearing nice things about Bend, OR.
Want to ride next time from Olympic Nat'l Pk south to NorCal along the coast
Planning to leave for Spain and a month there mid may-mid june

Radio in Europe is WAY diff from ours

Travlinguy...I was pretty fascinated by European radio...For news , everywhere I could receive Radio Luxemburg, I think it was...AM.........English radio seemed pretty punk..
In France I loved "Cherie FM." about every fourth song was American...and not top 40 ..so French radio ( Cherie FM at least.) did a better job of playing a variety of American music, than does US radio..Good luck in Bend..I hear it is dry and nice and not crowded...

here are my buttons:

1. 89.9, KCRW. indie/folkie stuff, interviews, live sessions. late at night is more electronic. better on the weekends because during the week it's mostly taken over by NPR (9am-noon weekdays is good though).
2. 95.5, KLOS. classic rock.
3. 103.1, INDIE. name is self-explanatory.
4. 106.7, KROQ. rarely listen to it, but it's better than having two of the same buttons. sometimes i change this button to 88.1, KJAZ. name is self-explanatory. :)
5. 105.1, KMOZART. classical.
6. 95.1, KUSC. classical.

Velo..Have to try some of these offerings..KLOS plays so little new stuff....? the KSCA 101.9 was the only offering of adult alternative...I so miss that station...
