Advocacy & Safety - Hit by car, bike totaled, not a scratch on me!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

"Pete, I heard you were hit by a car the other day! I'm glad you're ok," he consoled me. "I just happened to hear some people talking about it as I walked past. They said you were hit by a car yesterday and your bike was totaled!"

I thought hard. I pictured my bicycle safely parked at home. I couldn't seem to remember the incident, no matter how hard I tried.

"Um, no, I wasn't hit by a car, and my bike doesn't have a scratch on it, and I'm fine. The reports of my death seem to have been exaggerated," I joked.

We laughed at the crazy rumor, and he started to tell me his own amazing story. He went on to tell me about something that happened to him as a teenager.

He had been riding his bike home from football practice one afternoon. In a very unusual twist, he just happened to still be wearing his football uniform, pads, helmet and all as he rode. As he came around a sharp bend that motorists sometimes overshot and crossed into the oncoming traffic lane from excess speed, a driver did exactly that. My friend was riding on the right side of the road, "as far right as practicable." The driver hit him head-on.

My friend crashed through the windshield, head-first. His bike was totaled. But amazingly, he wasn't hurt.
Somehow, his football helmet protected him!

My friend is not given to telling tall tales. An amazing story...

Heh, and some people complain about their bad luck when they get a pebble through the windshield. But a whole football player! Still, it was the cager's fault, they deserve what they got.

Maybe the cager was an old football player whose position was Nose Tackle?

Another unfortunate argument for body armour on road rides

Had me goin' for a second there...until I remembered your bike set-up :D

Glad your friend fared well. But that football outfit is too hot for summer. When he gets his new bike, you may have to get his bike rigged with a car horn and similar set up to your bike.

I've heard a professional football player receives the same time punishment a person does in a car wreck! Regardless, the helmet a football player is subject to FAR MORE aggressive testing than a bicycle helmet. Maybe one day, they'll make a bike helmet just as strong.

Naw, just a weird story. I don't think I'd try it, myself! (Too hot...)
