My wife's cousin was talking to me about this boxing club he used to go to, but stoped because he had no-one to go with. I been thinking about taking it up for the workout. At thirty years old, am I too old to start boxing? I'm in fairly descent shape already from riding, but I want to lean ouot and build up some more stamina, energy and muscle mass. Anyone have any advice about the whole boxing thing? Thanks much.

I am 0-1 as an amateur boxer. By TKO.
Long story. Short boxing career.
Everybody's a badass until they lace up 16 oz. gloves to their fists, and then suddenly, the rest of the world gets a little quicker than you. I was 22 at the time, and in decent shape even though I lost 8 lbs. in a week to make weight for the fight. God, I was dumb then.
Training is another matter and is very cool. You'll develop significantly more upper-body power; I don't know how this would help a cyclist. I believe you could up your anaerobic threshold slightly just because you're developing it in another way (more upper body movement). Could improve your core strength too.
Good luck, though I'd say you're probably not going to dramatically upgrade your riding through boxing training. Oh and beware counterpunchers with good balance. :(

I'v never boxed, looks like fun though. I'd do it just for fun, no tournaments or anything.
I do wrestle though, thats a pretty damn good workout IMO.
What I do want to know is, does it hurt ALOT to get hit with the gloves?
Only if I get put into the fence in a sprint.

I used to Thai-box when I was younger and stupider. This is like normal boxing but you use elbows, fists, knees and shins. I found that it didn't really hurt (not like you expect anyway) when you get hit by a glove in the ring during a match as the adrenalin is flowing and you are just focusing on staying alive. You just suddenly find yourself on the canvas.

I'm not thinking really seriously about actual boxing; I'm more in it for the training aspect. I want to lean out a little bit. Just trying to get rid of the last little bit of chub around my mid-section. Is 30 to old for this type of thing?
It looks like a real heavy duty work out and I think that is just what I need, what with this extra energy I'm getting from riding more. I think it would be a cool hobby and a good break from the "work, family, work, family" routine my life is these days.
Plus, I'm hoping the wife will like the new me a little bit more :D

eh, I just want to hit somebody:D
Gurgus: I don't think 30 is too old for boxing. My uncle is 40 and he wrestles with me so I can practice new moves on somebody who knows what they are doing. No problems yet.
I used to do contact boxing with a trainer for about a year. He was a muay thai boxer and I worked pretty hard with him. I had unbelieveable upper body definition. Then he moved, and I couldn't find anyone willing to hold the gloves! Oh well, maybe someday.

Boxing training= Good workout
Boxing matches= Lack of any decision making skills

I could never do a boxing match. My decision would be to run! I like to hit, but I don't want someone to hit me back!

i used to do mixed martial arts and it was great fun, unfortunatley my knees didnt agree with me! have a go, if you dont like it you can always stop.
I know gus in their 40's and 50's who are fantastic martial artisits, so i cant see why your age would be an issue!

Boxing hurts!!! I did it for a year, and was in the best shape of my life. I would run six days a week, 7 miles M-F, and 10 on Saturday. Started sparring after 3 months--that's when the real pain began. Rotator cuff began to give me problems; the nose was broken, which healed wrong and had to have surgery years later to repair. In order to get my hearing back (caused by misaligned bone formation, stopping the fluid from flowing freely to drain) they had to refracture my nose--very painful. Rotator cuff was repaired years later, also. Another long story. Stick to training.
Cheers
My hat off to anyone that boxes. Its the only sport I know where the main objective is to knock your opponent senseless.
