I have a trek 4500 24 speed and the middle chainring has bent. After looking it over the inner chainring has chipped some teeth. What crankset would I need to buy to replace it and where could I get it? Do I need any special tools (is the park ccp-2 fine?) and should I also replace the chain? I'd like to keep the cost under $100.

Replacing a chainring is trivial -- no special tools are needed, just a regular allen wrench. There's no need to replace your whole crankset unless you bent the spider also.

Remove the bolts holding the rings to the crank spider, remembering where all the bolts and nuts and washers go. Replace your middle ring -- your 4500 has a 32-tooth chainring in the middle. You can probably find one for less than $20 if you looked around. Get your Local Bike Shop to help you out.

How does the middle chainring get bent wihout affecting the large chainring?
Where you in an accident?
My point is: It may not be bent and some of the teeth may have been made smaller to facilitate shifting.

I wasn't in an accident, it happened as I shifted. I inspected it again, and one quarter section of the middle chainring is bent inwards. It's bent in so much that it touches the chain when I have it on the lowest gear. Looking from above, the outer chainring looks fine. Is there someone online that has the chainring or should I go to the local bike shop?
