Good one...
It's good to see someone promoting "bike to work" as a lifestyle instead of a necessity.
I'm thinking of putting out flyers this summer at the bus stops (promoting transportation cycling) at several large malls in Jersey. There are just too many young men waiting on those buses every day when they could easily use a bicycle. I find that most of the men waiting at these stops are not carrying large packages and many have nothing!
I know there are women who say why should I leave them out of the equation? Most of the women tend to have children or bags of clothing which makes it difficult or impossible for transportation cycling. Furthermore, I believe women respond better if they are challenged or discriminated when something is offered only to men. I've only seen one woman use a bicycle to go shopping in the last 6 months! They are rare!
Anyway back to my Flyer.
I'm going to list on it several websites that have loads of information on transportational cycling as well as the economic advantages compared to the bus. I will post an email address in case anyone needs additional information. Nothing complicated.
I recently discovered that buses are very expensive and the fare box just keeps going up every year. I was shocked with the driver told me $1.70 for a ride that cost me $1.10 not too long ago. I boarded the bus with a pocketful of change and walked out with nothing! Incredible.
Also on the flyer will be a safe route to get into the mall. You would be surprised at how auto-centric malls in Jersey are and many are practically closed off to foot/bike traffic.

Kudos on your article. It's awsome to see someone actually doing something to promote bike commuting rather than just whining about how nobody does it.
I had the same idea as Steve but I'd put the flyers up on my campus. There is nowhere to park and a lot of people who could walk or bike drive in. It's good to go out and get the word out, it will at least show that people care.
Congrats for spreading the good word. Thanks. Hopefully, lots of people will get motivated by your story and give it a try. I never thought I'd be commuting by bike, but here I am, years later. Who'da thought?

Great idea with the flyers, Steve! I'd like to do the same, as well as post them on my OPAC site. (Which, in case anyone has checked it out, is not formally launched yet, and therefore has almost no users, but I'm working on it and want to launch it sometime this summer.) What electronic file format are you planning on distributing them in?
I think you should also include a few basic safety tips, like riding on the right and acting legally and predictably. And maybe even a link to these forums!
Good going! I hope you update, with hints and suggestions for others who might try similar good work.

How about you slash the tires of cars all around town, and leave flyers that say: "cars suck. ride a bike you jackass."
That would get your point across a lot more strongly.

It's the bike-unfriendliness, too - I've seen plenty of moms and dads with children and groceries on their bicycles in Europe and to a lesser extent parts of NYC (east village, park slope)

kickass!
Always great to get the word out. I never thought bike commuting would be so fun, and as good for you as it is too! Pretty much can't lose with it.
It's awesome you got that posted in the paper, everything we can do adds up.
Thanks for spreading the word.

And then hide in the bushes until they come to unlock their door, and punch them in the face while reciting the tenets of VC.

Nice, except I would use a u lock, and I don't/am not a VC.

I'd especially like that if you did it to my car while I was out riding.

Ha.
Grayson to Norcross. What kind of crazy fool would ride 15 miles in that area without a bike path?
:D
(I don't know, maybe there is one. But I kind of think this guy doesn't care if there is or not...isn't that you, PH?)

There's no bike path. It's rush hour traffic the whole way.
Yes, that's me.
