Recumbent - I want to build my own swb touring recumbent.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi guys I want to build my own swb touring recumbent. Cant someone post some designs and ideas on this thread? I want to use a 26" rear 20" front combo with underseat steering. I have some ideas but am puzzled as to height of front cranks in relation to seat? Its great to see some of the pictures on other threads but instead of modifing a current bike I want to build the frame from scratch. Hope someone can help.
Cheers
For a simple over view try www.hostelshoppe.com and look at the pix. This site has
complete specs for a large number of popular bents and is at least a start. You may
need to bum around on the HPV sites. A google on home built recumbents should
get you started. The height of the cranks is arbitrary at best and reflects the
builder's conceptualization. Some are at shoulder height, some umbilical some are
at or a little below hip level. Crank height is best determined by what kind of seat
and seat angle you anticipate using. A secondary parameter is seat height above
ground. If you want a low seat height (below 20") then some sort of bend/angle in the tubing will be needed with a 26" rear wheel. Very few builders post on this site.
www.bentrideronline.com has a message center where builders are more common.

This is just MHO, but I think that USS linkage is easier to set up if the seat and pedal heights are around the same. Bends in the frame will complicate the rod's routing. This makes for a moderately high seat, which is good for both being seen and for having baggage under the seat.
I am interested in building also. This is what I've found so far: Bentech.

I like Bentech's design. You can even buy a completely wielded frame set from them. They also have a forum of builders who can give great advice on building!
