Mountain Biking - Just washed my new bike after Riding

Hello, i have one question. I just washed my new bike after riding it for a few days and discovered that the chain had chipped away at the lower back frame. Its is not two bad but still its chipped after only a few rides. What should i do to protect it from getting worse?

also i could touch it up right now really easy and i dont think i have to worry about rust because its aluminum right?

a Chain wont killl your frame it will just scratch the paint that happens with me all the time..maybe you could put some skate grip tape over the part where it is hitting the frame.

it doesnt mean that the chain is to loose?

I assume your talking about the chainstay. THers plenty of chaintsay protectors. Raiyn will probably respond with a pic of his own which consists of an old tube wrapped around with zip ties. THe best i have used is...

polyurethane chainstay protector. It silences well, lasts forever and looks nicer than tubes+zip ties in my opinion. I like to get the black and fasten it on the ends with black electrical tape for a one piece type look.

No its not loose every bike does that its just when you go ove a bump or a jumkp or something the chain bounces around and hits your frame.

Lizardskin makes a great chain guard that you can buy at pretty much any bike shop. Get one (they're about $5), wrap it around your frame and you'll never have to worry about your chain chipping the paint again.

One thing to remember though is this: you're riding a mountain bike, it's going to get scratched and chipped.

well, I dont like having chips on my frame even if its a MTB. One thing to note is that this only happens when your not pedaling and usually during a descent is what i find. Though your best off getting a chainstay protector. Shifting to the largest chainring keeps the chain the farthest from the chainstay. Also keeping a tiny bit of tension on the pedals

Duct tape will eat your paint and could actually damage your bike worse than your chain. Take the duct tape off now before it's too late!

take the tape off. It leaves residue. Just get an old tube for now and buy that polyurethane protector. Its 3.99, you can afford it

The first one is a section of an old Specialized road tire (with the Flak Jacket) that I cut the beads off.

On my trail bike I use a section of water suppy hose I got at Home Depot

Of course the ubiquitous zip ties are in full effect here, but it's a quick and easy method of attaching things

I didnt care about my old Hardrock frame getting hit by the chain as much as the noise that it made.

I use lizard skins on my Klein MTB, nothing on the Trek or road bike. I had a lizard skin on the Trek (I moved it to the Klein when I bought it) when I road it off road a lot.

That's what spray paint's for. Do it right and it'll be real ghetto lookin'!

I've got a Lizard Skin on my HT and an old tube on my FS. My only concern is damage to the frame, not the paint. I guess I just don't trust aluminum like I used to....

yeah when i first got my bike i was worried that the chain was too loose aswell, but, as others have already said, its normal. i wrapped an old tube around my chainstay and secured with duct tape

Thats nearly as close as what i did. Just used an old tube. Except i used duct tape to wrap it around instead of zip ties.

Good gawd, some of those "cures" look worse than the disease!!! :D

I don't mind battle scars on my rig - it adds some character and shows that I ride the bike, not just look at it. If I wanted a piece of art, I'd buy a painting.

I bought a lizardskin for my 05 rockhopper and the damn thing barely fit on there.

It seems like everything LizardSkinZ makes is too little for some reason. Their fork boots will barely, I mean BARELY fit around my fork tubes.... Same as with their elbow pads, & chainstay protector. Must be like FOX Racing clothing. I have to order a size larger than with any other brand....

Aluminuym alloy can rust! Salt+Water+Aluminum=Hydroxide, I'm pretty sure, and it rusts the aluminum. Water alone won't do it though.

I now use old tires. Looks tough and works wonders. Also cheap because most of us have an old tire laying around.

I use old squash grips. It looks alright, especially if you use a darker colour that odesn't show discoloration. It sticks to the frame naturally without the need for zip ties. You can use the grip tape too to keep it on, and it's pretty suttle. Mine's covered in crap though so it looks pretty bad.
