Mountain Biking - Where/how do you store your bike?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I bought my house two years ago but alas, it has no garage. Right now I keep my bike in the basement, but now that my two roommates are getting into mountain biking as well it's starting to get kind of crowded down there! Are there any good solutions people have come up with for wall or ceiling storage? I'm trying to free up some floor space but still keep the bikes easily accessible...

In the basement you could get of those bike racks that go on the wall and hold a couple bikes. they are easy to install and the bikes come on and off rather easily (the frame just sits on a rubber platform. Since the title of the thread is asking i have a bike shop connected to the garage.

My friend took a hook, put it into the ceiling and hung some rope on the hook. The saddle goes into the rope, and rear tire leans against the wall. Perfect engineering --> reliable, & cheap

Yes. My pavement ride stays in my living room.

Dosent that get your carpet dirty?

Yes. When you live in college, there are certain liberties you are allowed to take that mommy won't let you.

I went to Lowe's, grabbed four, rubberized hooks, screwed them into the beams on the ceiling of my garage and hung my bikes, upside-down, over my wife's car. They're out of the way, easy to access and always ready to roll. The only downside: I have to remember to duck whenever I walk through the empty garage!

I keep mine in the garage, we have plenty of space. But i agree the 'bike on the wall' idea would probalby be the most efficent storage way. I've heard of other ones where the bikes on the roof? Dunno how that works..

i keep it in the basement. Its warm because of the furnace down there so any mud or whatnot dries fast.

I hang my bikes from the ceiling. The motivation to do this came from the Fox guide (on their WEB site) which recommends hanging their forks upside down to keep the seals/oil-scrapers lubed.

Are you one of those who lets the mud dry then brushes it off rather than hosing water all over the bike? That's my preferred method. Water and metal + bearings are not a good mix. With the mud in my area, a soft paint brush generally gets it clean.

Mine used to be kept in my room, which i liked because if you get bored at night, when everones gone to bed, whip the bike out and practise hopping around the room (ground floor room so no-one hears it) :D
But, i got told to put them down the garage to accomodate for my fishtanks, then again, sposer its for the best, hopping around on a bike next to a fishtank isnt a good idea.
I have my bike in my room, and the other one either also in my room, or in the garage.

we have a bike room, it's right behind my room in the house. It's tile, it used to be a kitchen. It's super sweet.

Mine is stored in the garage on a bike hoist. To pully's and hooks that hook to the handle bars and seat then you just hoist it up and out of the way.
I have an alcov cut in the ceiling so it fits up without ducking. no worries of hitting head.

I keep mine in a cave, at the bottom of Mt Kilimanjaro (just kidding). The MTB stays in my room, other bikes in the store.

At the foot of my bed. 8 floors high up. :)
I would love to see some pics of how you guys did all those methods, im trying to find a method to hoist my bike up somewhere. Mine is leaning against a wall, not to conveniant, scared of it falling all the time.
I'll make a pic right away.

Our bikes are in the garage hanging by the rear wheel on one hook from the ceiling. I've kind of turned the garage into a bike shop of sorts. Here's a pic...

I usually keep mine(whichever of the two is operational) in my car so I can go riding right after work. The other stays in the garage, upside down on the floor at the moment.

Me want goats! As soon as I get a new place, we're gettin' goats dammit!
Mine is stored in the garage on a bike hoist. To pully's and hooks that hook to the handle bars and seat then you just hoist it up and out of the way.
I have one of those--in a box. Might put it up eventually, but my garage has about a 14' ceiling. Gotta get up there first.
will hanging the bike on its rear wheel from the ceiling effect the rim or spokes?
Mine sit in my garage, between the two cars, in a 3-bike rack that I built out of PVC. Here's a pic of the rack, from the web page I found the instructions on:
http://www.utahmountainbiking.com/bikerack/Bungee.JPG
The detailed build instructions are at http://www.utahmountainbiking.com/bikerack/makerack.htm
The whole thing took me about an hour to build and cost less than $10 in materials. I originally built it as a two-bike rack but cut it in half and made it into a three-bike rack after I built up my singlespeed.
Right now it holds my MTB, my singlespeed, and my wife's roadbike. To make sure her bike doesn't flop around due to the skinny tires, I wrapped the supports of that part of the rack with pipe insulation.

Mine just stands like a nromal bike, with the rear whell leaning against atable in a garage that is so messy, it dosn't make anydifferece to the space it takes up ;)
I have a kickstand! :D so i don't have to worry about it falling down all the time, unless someone or something knocks it.

When i used to have a kickstand i felt they got in the way a bit over bupy urdfaces. It always used to make a noise, i dont feel i need one, i just lean the rear wheel against a tree, table, wall, anything !

I refuse to hose water all over the bike. I simply will not do it. THe only think i hose are the tires AFTER they have been removed of course
I find that if i hang up the bike on the stand in the basement, put something underneath and tap the tire with the shaft of a screw driver though (after mud is 100% dry). It all falls. Since i wax my frame methodically, all i have to do is go over once with a dry paper towel and the mud falls. Cleaning is fast, easy, and bearing friendly

I keep my city bike inside my apartment, and my mtn bike, wheels off, in the car. That way, its always ready to rumble, and I don't have to get mud everywhere. But I also can't clean it as often as I should.
