someone out there knows...the history of cinelli stems. I'd like to know what the vintage of the Oval Cinelli logo is, versus the flying "C". When did Cinelli do away with the oval logo? I have a '71 paramount with an oval logo and a patent number (underneath), a separate stem with just the oval logo, and a '78 somec with the flying '"C". And when did the 1R stem start to be manufactured? Does anyone know what came before the 1A? I know its minutiae, but it would be really cool minutiae to know...

Oval logo went away right about '78. The 1R came out in the early-mid '70s, and used a logo reading CINELLI on the plastic hole cover, after '78 it used the "flying C" on that cover. Before the 1A, there was the steel stem, early ones with the badge (couple of different ones, I think).

ah, so '78 is the year. I've got a 75 Masi, and it's got the wrong stem on it. Do you know when they retired the 1A and 1R?

Not sure, but I'd guess late '80s. BTW- a '75 Masi could have come with a ttt Record stem & ttt bars. I know '73-'74 had 'em.

I'm pretty sure Cinelli was still making the 1A into the late 90's. I bought one new in '96 or '97 if I remember correctly.

The 1R was a beautiful piece of bicycle art.

That's probably right; I bought a couple of NOS ones about 4 years ago on the "blow-out" table at a LBS.

The 1R is very cool to look at; not my favorite stem though... It seems that you have to grease the clamp mechanism & bars so they don't creak, but no matter how tight I get the clamp, the bars still want to slip when I hit a pothole... I take my Campy T-handle wrench along so I can retighten the clamp when on the road... The 1A never gives trouble.

Rubber cement betweeen the clamp & bars works pretty well to stop the creak for me. Never had the bars slip on me yet.

I have the Puch pantographed 1R. Great ebay find last year for $20.00

http://www.velostuf.com/Masi%20GC.htm is a way cool bit about a NOS 72 masi gc (Italian). It had a 1A when it was unwrapped. I actually got together a ttt stem and bars for the rebuild, but the cinelli bars and stem were so much prettier, I couldn't resist 'em. I have an older 1R somewhere. I'll probably just steal the button out of the front and retrofit it. When did Cinelli quit using the knight's crest on the bars? I have one of those on that bike...

I'm not sure what was up with the Cinelli/ttt thing on Masi bikes... My late '73-early'74 Masi (Carlsbad) came with ttt saddle (Masi stamped on sides), and ttt Record stem & Masi pantographed ttt bars. I've read that Faliero wasn't getting along with Cino, and went with ttt stuff, but as you say, many did have the Cinelli bars about then. Can't go wrong with either I guess; they're both sweet.

Cool idea; I'll have to try that. Mister Chuck S. told me to grease 'em, but rubber cement sounds good.

Well, the weather isn't quite as nice for riding up here as it is in OK. So, these little details become important, when the wind is blowing spindrift under the door to the garage. I think it'd be cool to have all of these little details organized into a web page, so people could date their rides, or put their rides back to original...

"when the wind is blowing spindrift under the door . . .."

I don't really know what "spindrift" is, but somehow it sounds like something you don't want to experience often.

spindrift is fine, fine snow. powdered to almost microscopic size by an unrelenting wind, it can fit into the tiniest cracks (like under your garage door). It makes relatively harmless piles until spring finally gets here. I tried to ride outside all year this year, and got about 500 miles from November to February, but I'm sure that I have relieved a lot of karmic debt with the associated suffering. The wind blows, as I recall, in OK as well, though, no?
