all this talk about weight has got me obessesed again. Im no weight weenie...but i prefer a sub 20 lb bike.

seems to me that steamrollers and iros are prolly a bit on the heavy side....yes/no?

do y'all have light bikes?

mine's just under or just over 20 depending on the scale. Besides the titanium railed saddle, every component on there was added because it was inexpensive and/or solid. I'd like a set of light wheels or maybe a lighter/sexier crankset, but I'm pretty satisfied with everything as is.

My red bike is probably 21 lbs or so.
The Kona cruiser is 25-ish.

Road Fixie

IRO Mark V Pro - Level hubs, Nitto bars... 20lbs even
IRO Jamie Roy - Bontrager Carbon fork, OS bar/stem, lighter build wheels... 17.5lbs
Surly CrossCheck - Just about 20lbs

Mountain

Bianchi PUSS - Sibex ti fork, Hope discs, White wheels, Profile carbon cranks... 19.25lbs
Dean Colonel SS - Dean steel fork, Avid mech discs, WTB/Spot wheels... 22lbs

Those are real weights, none of this bathroom scale 14lb steel bike BS that I see on forums sometimes...

Ok, how do you weigh your bikes then? I want to weigh my bikes, but don't have a scale and 60 bucks for a digital scale that you hang a bike off from is a bit much for a one time thing.

All I know is that my fixies weigh noticably more than my geared roadie.

Old Trek conversion with Brooks, seatbag, half full bottle and flashers, 20 and 3/4 pounds.

Last time I counted mine it weighs around 20. She is an old 80's japanese conversion with cheap parts.

Old School Bianchi Conversion: 24.6 pounds at the LBS.

A road guy saw that and scoffed at me.

I weigh them on a $60 digital scale that you hang a bike from.

Not trying to be elitist, just correct. I've seen plenty of posts of bike that are clearly weighed wrong on the internet. 14lb bikes with mediocre components come to mind... Just look around fixedgeargallery for some fanciful weights.

As for the Jamie Roy being lighter than the Mark V, it's the whole build. Cranks, wheels, bar/stem, fork. Frame weight doesn't vary THAT much between bikes. The highest priced carbon frame out there are 2.5lbs or so, where the IRO bikes are 4lbs or so. It's all in the build.

Just under 20lbs for me, not an exact measure, but stand on a scale without your bike, then with your bike, subract the smaller number from the larger one. Bingo

my 58 c-t iro jamie roy weighs 17. my 58 c-c bianchi pista with sewup wheels weighs 19... i'd estimate it weighs 20ish with the mavic ellipses.

my bike was roughly 23lb set up stock as a 7sp triple...
so minus chainring, rear brake, levers/shifters, derailleurs, cassette, etc etc etc... maybe its 20lb flat? (optimistically)

i'd trade stiffness for weight anyday, though.

About 22lbs last time I was in the bike shop. Not sure how accurate that was, though. I blame my steel bars.

My bike starts out pretty light, but then I fill my military surplus bags with all kinds of crap so I can be prepared for (uh, what did Trekkie call it?) nuclear infusion with acid rain?

Just wondering, did you have a special scale of some kind?

Road SS with coaster brake built from extra parts 22 lbs.

Fuji track bike with two brakes, freewheel, cog, bottle cage, computer, 21 lbs. 19.4 when new

My Motobacane Nomade weighs around 17 1/2 pounds (UPS scale) including saddle pack and stuff.
It has an ultra light weight front wheel on it...Mavic OR10 tubular rim, Hershey Racing Naked hub, laced with 28 titanium spokes...470 grams. The rear has a carbon Zipp tri-spoke tubular track wheel.

I would think you could build a track bike under eight pounds if you had the cash.

On the street it feels good to have a bit heftier bike beneath me.

My major taylor weighed 7 kg (15.4 lbs) on the scale at my lbs when I bought it. I've changed stuff, so probably 16-something now. I'm about to put steel nitto handlebars on it, so add another pound. My bianchi pista sl weighs closer to 20 I'm guessing--I've never weighed it.

i stopped by gotham bikes the other day and checked out the 13.1 lb 20 gear road bike. i was pretty amazed at the lightness of it until some old guy earnestly said "if you can't race on it, why would anyone buy one?" he had a good point.
on the other hand, i bought a lottery ticket today.

hah mine is 30 lbs(with full crank, cassette, shifters and dreailuers), with a 21.5 inch frame mtb dont get much lighter i think

CamB
04-13-05, 09:15 PM
18.4lb ready to ride (ok, so I took off the saddle bag).

Frame was 2.05kg or 4.5lb, Reynolds 531 steel, 57cm --> today's fancy alloy bikes might be down 1-1.5lb on that, and carbon a bit more, but no big deal in the scheme of things.

Rest of stuff on the bike is generally lightweight, but strong (eg, straight gauge spokes, 1/8" drivechain). It'd cost good money to get it below 18lb.

The local marina has a proper sliding weight scale for people to weigh their fish. The problem is, it hangs over the water, so if you slip with your bike......

labratmatt
04-13-05, 09:22 PM
Not a clue. I bet it's not light though. (I don't own a bathroom scale.)

57cm 85 lugged steel Bianchi frame with fenders and rack. Compents aren't cheap or anything, but they're not high end either.

Seems like it would be fairly easy to build a 15lb or 16lb fixie. Get a light weight frame and some lighter weight wheels and you'd be real close.

Man, my Fuji Track is 23#, I think. Maybe my scale's on the fritz.

As for a 13# bike..hey, you can always add random dead weight to bring it up to 15. It's kind of silly, but it's legal.

It's hard to find two scales that are the same. I just use a 50 lb hanging scale with a spring in it. I don't really know how good it is but I weighed a couple of bikes that matched another digital scale and it was right on in the 20 to 25 lb range. So it's probably close. I weighed a couple of other bikes that matched the claimed weight in the catalogue. ?? which is amazing !! I don't know what year your Fuji is, mine was 19.4 in the catalogue and about the same on my scale before I put the brakes on. I lost track (no pun intended) of what year it was. They changed the color the very next year. ??

My fuji track is a little under 20lbs (weighed at my LBS)

My Huffy Superstar Converted Fixed Gear weighs about 35lbs. HAHAHAHA (one piece cranks, steel rims (26inch) with a rack on the back) it rides like a tank!

It was 15 lbs. 13 oz. Then I put a saddle bag and rear fender on, changed the stem from a 120mm salsa to a 140 mm Ritchey wcs, and added a cross brake lever and a Mafac brake. Oh, and I changed the rear tire from a lightweight Schwalbe to a wire-bead Armadillo. Now I guess it is 17 something. After I get the Level flip-flop rear wheel going, I'll weigh it again.

You can race a 13 pound bike if you're not forced to weigh your bike at the start as in UCI races, it isn't like USA cycling has a scale at your local event. My racing bike is in the 15-16 pound range.

It really makes it a lot easier to have a lighter bike. You can ride more often without getting fatigued - for me it means less time on the train, more time on the bike. And in races it is a decided advantage.
