I'm trying to get the most out my old 8spd Shimano Ultegra STI road drive-train.

I had been using a 53-43 chainset with a 11-25 cluster for a long time with no problems.

I switched to a 53-39 chainset because of a very hilly ride.

Now that I'm going on a flat ride I switched to a 12-21 cluster but left the 53-39 chainset on. (more hill rides coming)

Anyway, I get accurate acceptable shifting on the 39 chainring across the entire cassette. But when I'm on the 53 ring, the chain stalls when upshifting. (going to smaller cogs)

Cable housing and wire are checked and lubed. Chain has less than 2000 miles.

LBS says rear deraileaur is worn out. So why does it shift perfectly on the cogs when on the small chain ring?

Please discuss in detail.
