My replace lock for the new york chain came in a while back. Been using it for a while. Today it came apart into two pieces...
Anyone have similar problems.

hmmm...nope. Cuz I stuck with the American Lock I dropped $ on. It works better than the Kryptonite "upgraded" lock IMO.
i bought a new mini u lock, the key got jammed in there a couple days after using it. same thing happened to a friend of mine.
krypto has lost it, i think.

I've got the masterlock mongo silver job that I used in the interm, but doesn't have the size I like of the krypto lock.
Did you get a letter about the class action law suit that's going on?

I got a couple replacements from them, the only one I've used is the mini, and it's fine so far. Think I'll probably just stick with the american lock on the chain.

very strange that you mentioned this happening to you AND your friend because it actually happened to me too. had a fun time trying to cut the lock off my bike.
anyone had any experience with onguard minis? are they susceptible to the keys breaking off in the locks?

When I got my replacement mini from Kryptonite, I passed my OnGurad mini to a friend. He came home one day to the lock open on the ground and his bike gone. Don't know what's up with that other than it sucks ass.

My Kryptonite mini-u is working great, but I haven't used the replacement disk lock for my chain yet though, I’d rather just continue using the masterlock that I brought since it seams just as heavy duty and it's much easier to close.
I am sending it back, just got my UPS stuff from them. we will see once the lock comes back.

Where did your lock actually come apart?

Kryptonite and OnGuard are using a very similar locking mechanism on their 2005 flatkey locks. Inside the key passageway there are seven to ten thin metal plates with a "key cutout" in each. Each cutout must be aligned with the plate above and below it. Otherwise, your key may turn freely, yet the lock will refuse to lock (or refuse to unlock). And, the key may get "stuck" against a misaligned plate when you try to pull it out.
If you key is stuck, gently wiggle it free of the lock. NO force. Forcing the key downwards, or forcibly twisting the key might break the key or might damage the locking mechanism.
Then, use the tip of your key to twist the the top plate back into alignment with the second plate. Align the second plate to the third plate, and so on. When each one of the ten plates has its "cutout" matching the other nine, you will be able to insert the key all the way down to the bottom plate. The lock will now work perfectly.
I checked this quirk on five or six different models of OnGuard and Kryptonite flatkey locks. Most of them had plates that fit tightly to each other. On just one, the top plate was so loose that just "road vibration" could easily shake it out of alignment.
To avoid accidentally misaligning any of the plates in the keyway, be sure to push the key all the way to the bottom and fully seat it before twisting. And, pull the key straight up , with no twisting as you withdraw it from the keyway. If you ever have a problem with the lock refusing to lock, or to unlock, just take a few seconds to carefully realign the plates inside the keyway.
OnGuard has added a red warning sticker to its locks, saying "Fully insert the key before turning". But, their instruction sheet does NOT say what to do when the key malfunctions or you can not open your lock...the simple solution is just to get the plates back into alignment, fully insert the key, and then open the lock.

You are one of MANY people to post complaining about the new "flat" keys breaking off in the locks, or people have a "fun time" trying to cut their lock off their bike when the new locks refuse to open.
Just "realign" the plates inside the keyway until the rectangular "cut" on each plate matches the plates above and below it. Insert the key all the way to the bottom, and your lock will easily open. Do NOT use force, be gentle...it just takes a few seconds with practice.
Anyone miss their "round key" locks yet?

This is VERY debatable. The Ace II lock on the old Kryptonites is one that probably isn't. I left one with a locksmith for two months - he couln't pick it! He had the proper (& expensive) tool to pick cylinder locks & he could pick the old Kryptolocks, Citadels & others. So, you're saying a novice with a Bic pen could do in 30 seconds what a trained locksmith could not in two months with the proper tools? Hogwash!

Certain 2004 model Kryptonite locks could be picked with certain BIC pens by folks who the "knack". Other Krytonite models, made over the past three decades, could not be picked with a BIC pen, or only by using "odd" and hard to find pen sizes. Proven cases of a bike stolen using a BIC pen: zero. (Except in Raiyn's imagination, where BIC pens are a REAL threat, just like UFO's and ghosts).
Given that Kryptonite locks come with insurance policies of $500, $1,000, $2,000, and $3,000, depending on the model, the Kryptonite company would have been rapidly bankrupted by insurance claims IF crooks actually had the ability to use the BIC pen method "on the street". They couldn't, and they didn't, and Kryptonite did not suffer from an epidemic of theft claims.
But, now we are stuck with the "flat key" locks, and we will just have to learn to live with their own unique set of "quirks".

I totally agree. I read that a cycling publication had written about this issue in 1992. If this method had been THAT successfull, do you think it would have taken 13 years for the idea to cross the "pond?" Not likely! When the car jack method hit the streets, it hit like wildfire. Everyone was losing bikes right away. I think this thing is totally overblown.
Actually, Kryptonite's fine print required that the lock fail mechanically, it actually physically broken. Peices of the broken lock were to be provided to Kryptonite. And if you tried to collect, Kryptonite would also require that you provide BOTH original keys. The loss of one key would void your claim. They also required that a police report be filed, to discourage bogus or fraudulent claims. And even if you met all the above criteria, they would only pay the balance after any insurance payouts.
At least that was the case when I went through the registration process eons ago!
