i planned my recent trip so that i was in Philadelphia the weekend of the race on my recent vacation (2 1/2 week visit back to the US, visiting Montreal, Massachusetts, NYC, Philadelphia, Dallas plus day trips to Albany NY and Burlington VT)
it was great to see a US cycling event with so much spectator support! the streets were lined with people - almost the entire course was full of people and the first climb as well as 'the Wall' in Maneoc (no idea how to spell that) was jammed full of people cheering and really getting into bicycle racing. the weather was great and i spent the whole day watching the race or visitng house parties along the race-route.
maybe some day the US people at large will actually value cycling as in Europe... but unfortunately the forces are againt it b/c there's not as much money to be made as in auto-racing or football/baseball/basketball/golf... but maybe i'll be surprised and cycling support will continue to grow in the wake of Lance... but in any case it was still so refreshing to see such general support in Philadelphia! it was a great race and the people of Philadelphia, both cycling enthusiasts and general Joes seemed to really enjoy the event!
I wanted to go down to Philly this year (it's only about an hour drive), but I had finals to study for. I went the last two years, and had a great time. This year I had to watch it on TV, but it was pretty good coverage since it's local.
nathank, it's spelled Manayunk. Total block party over there, huh? :)

Is it just the way it looks to me, or are Canadians doing really well this year?

Well, it seems like I've heard more this year about Canadian riders since, I dunno, Steve Bauer (now, there was a monster... late 80's/early 90's)? Or maybe I'm just noticing them more.
