Mountain Biking - Dream Bike

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I've seen so many threads on ppls new rides, and I know I'm not getting a new one for a while. So I thought I'd indulge in a little dreaming. I encourage you to do the same. I'd use it for technical XC, but could use it as a do-everything bike. Here's my dream bike:

I dont know why you would use alpine spokes.

alls i have to say is cannondale gemini 3000
How much is it worth??? priceless... cost - about 6k. weight is under 24#, which is probably good enough.
Why not use Alpine spokes. I'm 210#, and prefer things bulletproof. How much weight would I save with Competitions? not much. But perhaps there's a better alternative. Thoughts?
The tires weigh over 2 pounds, so saving 20g on spokes seems silly.

yea, Sapim CXrays are a better spoke. i know Peter white doenst like alpines, i talked to him on the phone about it and got a nice rant. Competitions are plenty strong but CXrays are just cool.
I know P. White said something that the heads come off, i can see a problem though, that is most high end hubs have smaller spoke holes. So if you get a nice hub with 2.3mm spoke holes, will the alpine have a nice fit?
I've just had a bit of play in some of my lesser than high end hubs, so i thought i'd choose something a little bigger. If there are 2mm holes, I'll use 2mm spokes. If 2.3, I'll check out those sapim cxrays (checkin now anyway). On the dream bike, there will be no washers.
cxrays look sweet: light and strong. I'm sure i could figure out bladed spoke builds...

no washers? I think they look nice personally, that touch of gold with my shiny silver hubs and spokes. CXrays dont require hub filing which is nice
I'm still wondering about the fork. Reba Race seems like a mid to good range fork (quality, not travel). Other suggestions on 29er forks?
On washers - sometimes they give a little extra bling, but they also have a clutteredness about them that I just don't like so much. I'd rather have my spoke match my hub than have to put washers in for wiggle-freeness. or something.
Did a little looking around, and found White Brothers BW 100 Air. I'd rather this on my dream bike, based on reviews/press. Anyone with White Brothers forks? Testify.

You should go with the FSA carbon crankset, or even the XTR. I like the carbon one better though, it's sexier.

You know... I do like the FSA cranks. I have some FSA Carbon Pro cranks on my roadbike. However... these looks so much cooler.

Am I the only one who doesn't have one dream bike. I own my dream djer. I have a dream trail bike and a dream dh/fr bike. The only time I dream of one bike is the mythological "do it all" bike.

^ That's certainly an awesome bike that I wouldn't mind having, and it might just qualify as a 'dream' bike (not that I dream about bikes.... much).
If I had to choose one bike for doing everthing, it'd most likely be a Cove Stiffee frame, marzocchi all mountain fork, mavic 717 rims, chris king hubs, x.0 derrailuer, single ring with a custom bash guard, fsa v-drive cranks, avid mech brakes, etc...

HELL YES, I cant wait to trash on this monster. Im currently out cause I have been habitually bending rims (2 in 2weeks NOT HAPPY) so by the time I get this beast I will be itchin for some @$$ kickin :D if you want one day you could come over and you could touch it....................just once tho.........haha everyone will hate me, Im gonna be so protective.............
snakehunter
04-17-05, 07:11 PM
170mm BTW
phantomcow2
04-17-05, 07:11 PM
yea im pretty protective over my bike. I got some abnormally good deals and i dont want anybody to break anything because i will have to pay full retail. ANd you know, its my bike and only mine so theres only a select few who can touch it, but only I can work on it :). 2 rims in 2 weeks? Sheesh, what rims are they? Look at velocity cliffhangers or vuelta Excaliburs if you bend another. And lace them up with wheelsmith DH13 and you've got some beasty wheels to go on that monster

well the where rhyno lyt XL's and it was beacause of a faulty chain (chain slips I endo, knee thru wheel) so it wasnt my fault entirely, AND Im about to drop a LOAD on the Dirtbag, so I dont want to throw a bunch of money at a bike that when I get the new ride Im just gonna use for camus travel. Besides, its a trek 4300 that I freeride with, things are gonna break (Im 6'5" and 245 lbs) so Im just gonn get another XL rim and take it easy till I get the Transition people eater (thats what Im gonna call it)
phantomcow2
04-17-05, 07:33 PM
well the cliffhanger or excalibur rim isnt that much more expensive than the XL rhyno lite. 750 grams for the excalibur though, it will certainly keep you rolling once you've got it started!
i'd love a 1992 Fat City 10th Anniversary...
Hmmmmmmmm...
Frame: can't decide either- Intense M3/Turner DHR/ Nicolai Nucleon TST
Fork: Ti Foes Curnutt XTD (Rare, sexy and excellent internals)
Rear Shock: Avy mTn (rare atleast in Aus, tuneable and dead sexy)
Stem: Aireal Fatty (gotta support the Aussie comapny)
Front Brake: dual 8 inch Gatorbrake 8 pots (purely for bling factor)*
Rear Brake:8 inch gatorbrake 8 pots (bling factor)*
Brake hoses: Goodridge (better modulation, don't believe me try them yourselves)
Headset: Ti Chris King (does it need to be explained?)
Bars: Answer Pro Taper (I like these)
Shifters: XT trigger shifters (oooooooohhhh he's going the Shimano)
Chain Device: E13 SRS (arguably the best)
Rear derailleur: Dura Ace Short Cage road derailleur (crisp shifting)
Cassette:SRAM PG970 12-26 road cassette (better gear differences for racing IMO)
Chain: SRAM PC990
Grips: ODI Oury Lock-ons (lockons + Oury = :D )
Cranks: RaceFace Prodigy DH (stiff)
BB: RF Signature DH ISIS (Stiff)
Chainring: FSA DH 40T or 42T (currently run one and like it)
Hubs: Hadley Trials hub rear (gold)/ Gatorbrake dual disc compatiable hub :p
Rims: Mavic 721's F/R (light but strong enough to race)
Tyres: Minnion DHR 2.25 SR and Minnion DHF 2.5 SR (good pattern and soft)
Seatpost: Thompson (I like)
Seat: Whatever came on the '02 Bighit comp... that was comfy
Pedals: Atomlabs
This is a race ready DH bike strong enough to huck around... If only I were writing down the spec of a pure bred DH bike...
*I want to test the strength of my forks and frame... see if they snap due to the amount of force created from a total of 24 Pistons and 12 brake pads
Hate to think what that would cost, hell the Nicolai frame would cost me about $7000-8000 AUD
