General Cycling Discussion - Should I let go? S-works

Hi guys,

My friend is offereing me $1600 for my 2003 S-works E5 road bike. Drivetrain is full Dura Ace 9speed. Ksyrium SSC wheels. No pedals. I haven't been using it anymore lately. Should I let it go? The thing thats holding me back is that I might get a better deal somewhere else... and it's a really sweet bike! Hope you guys can enlighten me. Thank you!

I think you might be able to get more for it, depending on the condition.

My E5 is all beat to hell. Scratches from rocks hitting the frame, scratches/dents from falls, etc.

yeah, the condition of the bike is really good. I really babied this bike and had no scratches to it except some little chips on the wheels which are pretty normal. Am I stretching it if I ask for $2000 on it? not to my friend but maybe to somebody else.

I think that $2000 is a very fair price. I would have paid that in a heart beat! Where are you at, and what size is it? My son is looking for a bike.

I wouldn't take under 1800 for it.

I agree with Larue. If im not mistaken S works is rather high end. Ksyrium wheels, full dura ace; thats pretty expensive stuff

well if you sell it, use the cash to get a nice mtn bike! THen you can be a hardcore cyclist :D

That's exactly what I'm doing Phantomcow2! I started doing some xc about a month ago using a beat up Raleigh M80 I bought really cheap. You know, just to see if I would like mtn bike. I really like it. Now, a lbs here is trying ti get rid of their last Jamis Eureka. I know its a more freeride/urban bike but I thought I could still do some xc on it too... and some trials stuff. Plus its a really good deal being a closeout bike. Its just a discontinued model though.

oo! Very nice! XC is where im at now. I will warn you, if you buy a free ride/urban bike you will not be happy if your wanting to do trail riding. They are just not efficient in the least! I dont know what your budget is here, but i suppose if your selling off your roadie you can make a good 1800+. THat leaves plenty of play for a kick ass XC rig. THe great thing with XC bikes i think is that they are really hte only type of MTB thats good for road as well. Put some slicks on it and yourself, sure you can do road travel with any bike. But that 5 inches of suspension is gonna suck the efficiency from your feet

With the DA and SSL's you should be able to get $1900+ for the bike easily.

Oh and about the XC bike, listen to phantomcow2. If you get a FR/Urban bike you WILL NOT be happy riding the trails with it. It'll be much beefier than is needed(which equals heavier) and the geometry is all wrong for XC.

Yep, thats the main issue with the DJ/urban type bikes. I can respect the people who are after that but I wouldnt touch one with a 5 foot poll. They are just crappy for most anything else. Sure you can get a longer seatpost, but the frame geometry isnt adjustable as well ;) . You know, you might try custom building an XC rig. I honestly believe that if you know how to shop that it will be much cheaper. There are plenty of advantages, i know you can try Leader bike frames. They are quite nice, their 05 frame is something like 3.5lbs for the 21" version, not too shabby.

Put some Truvativs on there attached to a SID on sale and you've got a mean lean trail blazing machine :p

I'd consider the "friend factor" too ... would he sell you something for less than it's worth? I have friends who I would sell things cheap to.

if he's really your friend, not just a "my friend" kind of friend, let him have it. Spread the fun, the goodness, and the pleasure. There's nothing like a good deal to make the good karma flow.

If I get that much from the bike(1800+), I still won't be able to use all of it. A large sum of that amount needs to go somewhere else. Thats why I can only spend that much on the Jamis bike. I've been leaning towards a bike that's Urban/trials and XC at the same time. I know its pretty hard to get a mixed of both on one bike. I see where you guys are coming from about the frame and its geometry and I totally agree. Don't you just wish you could have one of each kind of bike?? I'll give it more thoughts once I sell the bike.
Oh, and for my friend... it's ok if I don't sell it to him... he'd probably do the same thing to me anyway. hehe. but his cool. good times!
