Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Despite the general discontent I've seen with this group and multi-use trails, I was wondering if anyone could tell me where the ideal location is to ride on this path. I understand from certain websites that the 5 miles closest to the city of this trail is generally a quite undesirable place to ride due to pedestrian traffic. Anyone recommend a good starting location / range on this?

I haven't been there for about a year but I think it was better to hop on west of Floyd road. It always thinned out past there. Watch out though, at every parking area near the trail you will encounter a few people.

Last year I went to Rockmart and back and had a good time. Some areas are very quiet and peaceful.

You know...I think I'll go out there tomorrow and see for myself.

Start at the Floyd Road parking area (#4 on the map).
There is adequate parking, a convenience store for snacks, and the Silver Comet Depot (http://www.silvercometdepot.com/index.php3) which has snacks, bike stuff, maps, information, etc.

On the weekend, ride from this point or farther west to avoid the crowds (joggers, dog walkers, strollers, kids on bikes, etc.). And start early in the morning. Once you get about 10 miles out the crowds thin out a lot.
During the week the crowds don't come out until later in the day.

Thanks for all the information. I did go out this weekend and set in at the Carter Rd. entrance. You're right, once you get out a few miles (to about where it changes from asphalt to concrete), the crowds really do thin out.
I do have some ambivalent feelings about the "bacon wagons" patrolling (Sheriff's Dept. in a motorized cart). Otherwise, this was a quite enjoyable trail.

I've heard only good things about the Silver Comet trail.

I've never ridden on it, mostly because it would take me 45 minutes to drive to it (other side of town.)

I wouldn't mind trying it someday.

I ride the Silver Comet quite frequently from Rockmart towards Hotlanta and enjoy it most of the time. If you can get out during the week it is great. If you ride on the weekend the earlier the better because mama and all her kids get there later in the day. Even then though it is only bad around the parking area's which are pretty far apart on the Rockmart end.

It still beats the heck out of fighting with cars...
