From one fad to another...

Hardly a fad. The hardtail in the pic is 17 years old. It is a 1988 Stumpjumper that has been ridden almost every day since my girlfriend gave it to me for Christmas 1988. It has more than 27000 miles recorded on the computer I bought in 1992. The other bike in the picture is more of a fad than a stiffy is.

I just mean how many people consider SS to be a fad as well as a rigid fork. I think both SS and rigid forks have their place in MTB but both together? Thats what BMXs are for. But if its just temporary, i forgive you :D

All you need is some cromoly cranks, maybe some silver Profiles.

Yes, about 95% of the miles that are on the bike computer are off-road with knobbies. I think the bike actually has about 40k+ miles on it but since 1992 it was almost exclusively off-road. It is now used to haul my kid around in a trailer.

I wouldn't even consider a dh course. Not a proper one anyways. I know some really good riders on 24" bikes (pornking) and they ride whistler full time, they still need a jrT.

I dont think i would ever manage a rigid again. I could do it but i sure as hell would not like it. I went over a curb with one and sheesh, no cushion. Suspension has made my soft

Haha, ive made my mz so rigid tight, its not a dj3, but its sort of close. Yeah, it hurts, more, but you get more "pop" out of it, I think. And you get less pedal bob, off the fork.

I vibrated my arms and neck/head a lot when I first got my bike with the rigid fork, but you kind of learn to land softer using your hands/wrists to cushion it a little, but without putting a lot of strain on them... Basically I just hold the grip with my fingers right before the front touches down, then let my palm come back onto it.

Now riding my squishy (admittedly crappy also) RST fork seems strange. But, it does help on rocky descents where I need to hold on to the grips pretty tight the whole time.

To each their own, but I'm tired of all the rattling and numbing of rigid fork and hardtail. I am now in the market for a FS. So much to learn and so many choices!

Wow you are sensative aren't you. I think I can explain what he means because I agree. Ok take away the retro rigid users. The ones who have always been like that. Whats left. A bunch of kids following one fad to another for the hardcore mountain biking scene. Last year every djer/urban rider was switching to 4in super stiff forks on a ss. This year they are ditching the fork and going rigid. 3 years ago it was about having 17inches total travel. The year after they realized travel blows for jumping and urban.

Same thing is happening in dh too.

Whats gonna happen next year, who knows. Sure is fun to watch though. I am 90% sure 80% of riders on mtbr, ridemonkey and hcor that are currently converting, will find something new to do with their bikes next year...maybe pink streamers....

Pink streamers. Sweet. I think gyros will get put on more MTB's, since BMXers are shunning them...

I think brakeless will become more 'core'

It already is 'core'. Maybe fixed gear for dirt jumping? lol

i wouldnt want to ride brakeless, because i need to be in control of things when i ride, the only thing it makes sense for is vert bmx.

I ride a rigid singlespeed bike with cantilevers because I just ain't smart enough for suspension, gears or disc brakes.
