No Tour patron.....first time since 1999. Lots of looking at each other, by both riders and team DS's.

Everyone assumed he would crack and just marked time with the main objective - knocking off the yellow jersey.

Pereiro's team wasn't strong enough to counter Floyds break if they wanted too.

It only became obvious that Floyd was likely to carry on when everyone reached the last climb, and then it was far too late.

The whole race so far has been a litany of failure by various teams to capitalise on advantages and of poor tactical decisions.

Pretty amazing stage, though. Caught an interview with Landis on Eurosportnews this morning - if anyone gets Foxtel, have a look and check out the guy's eyes, they are seriously scary.

Just read the whole Stage 17 thread. There's chunks all over my screens and keyboard.

Do yers think if Cadel was doing what Landis did today we'd be so pathetic?

Anyone else seen the brilliant sequence of photos from the Tour of Qinghai Lake in China that show how NOT to get food from the team car? First photo is here:

Scary crash sequence that. I always hate watching the pros getting serviced on the go next to their cars, it looks like it could go wrong so quickly.

Hey guys. I haven't been around for a while and probably won't get a chance to come back for a longer while...Mrs Wattsy and I have started separation proceedings. She's a career lady and I'm a bit old fashioned. End result haas been that last few years in conflict about where she should spend her time...Yes Matagi...I know, I should be respecting her right to live her life.

Bottom line is that we had a fight last Thursday and all hell broke loose. Monday night we sat down and had the most difficult conversation of our lives. We have decided to try councelling and are committed to trying to make this work, but I suspect too much damage has been done to both of us. We have been together now for 23 years and she is all I know, so I am pretty devostated at the moment. Fortunately we are both respecting each other and trying to do right for our two kids.

Sorry to bring the forum down, but I'm hoping that sharing some of my burdon anonymously will help...time will tell.

no, Landis is clean, just go ask anyone in the stage 17 post. esp those who have a "man crush" on him. like WTF? i thought the aussie soccer bandwagon jumpers were bad but this is just stupid.....

So given that there were only a handful of teams capable of "creating" a patron....why didnt someone standup? Everyone could see Sastre and Kloden are leaders..but the teams dont seem able to control the race?

*Thinks T-mobile couldnt have been this bad strategically if der Kasier was racing..?
*Thinks CSC couldnt have been this bad strategically if der Kasier was racing..?

We're talking about Cadel not having a team but Phonak were generally no-where to be seen in the hills and not in stage 17!

If Ullrich or Basso were racing they would have nullified a bunch of these threats, so as i'm guessing these instructions come from the DS? Why didnt this happen?

Glad I didn't write that. Fortunately they were to busy on Euro's ass to give you a bagging.

Sorry to hear about that wattsy. Maybe some time apart to think will do yers both good before it's to late. Good luck.

Wattsy, you need a laugh, so here's some weird Japanese stuff. You have to watch the second one right through for the crazy sauna chair sledding.

My guess is that at this level, 99% of the difference between rider A in the lead group and rider B is between the ears. Having the confidence, both self and from your team-mates/DS, that you are the rightful "leader" of a Tour is what separates an Armstrong or Indurain or Riis from a Zuelle, Breukink or a Bugno.

As I only have examples form the late 80s and 90s to go from ....I'll use 1991. On stage 13 to Val Louron, when Indurain and Chiappucci rode off to win and Indurain pulled on his first ever yellow jersey, Bugno would say in later years that if he followed that move, he'd have had a different career, implying Indurain's ability to intimdate him (and no doubt, others) in later years by just being in a group meant that any attack was folly. Indurain not doubt exploited this and his Banesto squad of the early 90s is mirrored in USPS/Discovery = wins.
