I haven't completely planned my trip yet but aside from being in Melbourne I'm thinking of spending some time in Brisbane so I can go snorkeling on the great barrier reef.
So what's the most beautiful riding in Australia?
Well you should have some fun cycling in Australia although most if it wil probably end up being around the capital cities. June will be winter in Australia which isn't anything like a Canadian winter but you should bring cycling clothes for ALL seasons. Melbourne will be cold and maybe a little damp although we are in a prolonged drought at the moment so who knows. Unfortunately the drought is leaving much of the country parched and not as scenic as it could be.
Now by the time you get to Brisbane and further north it will be hot. Brisbane locals think its get's cold in winter there but us southerners think its just mild and as a Canadian you will think that its quite hot so be prepared for all seasons.
I live just beside Canberra the nations capital which is quite nice to cycle around and you can visit the national monuments if your into such things. It will be cold in Canberra at that time of the year however.
There isn't realy much of a rural road network in Australia. Its mostly cities joined by a few major and secondary highways. The Major highways are probably safer in that they have wide shoulders but they are boring. The secondary highways can be twisty and narrow with fast moving cars not expecting cyclist around the corner so they are for the brave and not nessecarily relaxing, safe or realy enjoyable. There are some nice rural area's to ride through although you will need specific local knowledge to find them.
Anyway cycling around Melbourne, parts of Sydney, maybe Canberra, Brisbane and further north like Cairns (thats up where the Great Barrier Reef is) will be enjoyable.
