Hey guys,
Just wondering how everyone else goes with our 'mountains' around canberra.
I got up black mountain today for the first time without stopping, which im pretty happy about considering im 196cm and 92 kg without a granny gear.
Anyway, how do you guys go with climbing Mt Ainsley and Black Mountain? Any idea what % climb they are?
Also, do you guys think it's worth riding up to Stromo observatory, and whats it like compared to the other 2 main ones?
Cheers,
Daniel.

Hi Daniel,
There aren't too many Canberran's here. I've riden up Mt Ainslie and Black Mountain years ago although I don't feel fit/healthy enough to take them on at the moment but one day I will do them again.
I don't know what the % grades on them are. I went looking for that information a while ago but couldn't find it. It must be out there somewhere though.
Going for a ride up Mt stromlo would be a nice change although its not as steep as the others. You could also ride up Red Hill which isn't that long but its fairly steep in sections.
Regards, Anthony

mate, i think youre doing great guns to knock off black mountain like that. its a tough climb. i think ainslies last ramp is a touch steeper than anything else close to town? and red hill is pretty tough all the way, and great fun descending. stromlo, as mentioned earlier, is not as steep as the others ad isnt really all that long either. there are so many fun hills to ride around the can, and theyre so close to town that you can access them and measure your progress so easily. let us know your next milestone!!

After reading this thread I got all motivated and I rode up Black Mountain today, first time in about two years. Made it all the way without stopping. I tried to do it a few weeks ago and had to stop about half-a-dozen times on the way up. Thought I was going to have a heart attack, obviously my fitness has improved a bit since then.

Here's what my Garmin 305 GPS recorded.
BLACK MT
From the Cnr at the bottom.
Up = 244 metres
Dist = 2.70
Av. Grade = 10.3 (there are a few (short) bits where you either level out or go slightly down so sums may seem strange)
Max Grade = 15.6
My Av speed 11.1 (not bad for first time AND I only go down to 39 / 23 )

MT ANSLIE
From the Cnr at the bottom
UP = 222 metres
Dist = 2.94
Av Grade = 8.9 (there are a few (more than Black Mt) bits where you either level out or go slightly down so sums may seem strange)
Max Grade = 14.5
My av speed = 11.7 (rode straight over after Black Mt - but this has more flat at the bottom to increase the av.)
