Visiting Melbourne in early March... Century ride?

Hey, I think I will be in Melbourne the last week of February or first week of March. I am pretty sure I will have a weekend in there. It's not realistic to bring my bike, but if I can rent a decent bike, I might try and get in a ride or two...

Any insight on renting? Any rides you might suggest I research? I do plenty of centuries and would like to try something fairly long, but any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thx much!

G'day from Australia. I'm not sure about bike rentals in Melbourne. Riding around the bay and back would be the first ride to suggest. I think its more than a century if you wan't to go the whole way and back.

    Enjoy your visit.

Late feb / early march is a great time to be in Melbourne - there's plenty happening and the weather is usually great. What type of century do you want to ride? Something flat and coastal, or get some hilly terrain in the country?

If you want to do a nice scenic coastal ride, try Beach Road. It extends from just south of the city, and follows the bay about 60km south-east where you can continue on to some seaside towns, or come back into the city. It's a VERY popular route for cyclists.

There's a glut of hilly rides you can do within a day from Melbourne city, mostly in the east. A big day in the saddle would take in a few climbs of Mount Dandenong about 40km from the CBD. Lots of on-road, MUP or even public transport options to get there too!

I don't check threads here very often so PM me for any more info if needed

Where will you be staying? St Kilda Cycles offers road bike hire for $60 a day/ $170 a week - http://www.stkildacycles.com.au/inde...136&Itemid=293 I've never used them but their shop looks ok.

There are lots of Audax events in Victoria. Have you looked up Audax Australia?

Are you thinking of staying right in Melbourne or travelling around a bit. One of the places I'd recommend going, if you're going to venture out of Melbourne, is Wilson's Prom. If you make your way to Cowes, on Phillip Island, it would be a century to ride from Cowes to Tidal River on Wilson's Prom. That's quite a good ride which I've done twice, once in each direction. It will be a bit busy around Phillip Island, but should be do-able.

travel plans keep changing, but it looks like I might have most of a second weekend there. I found a bike shop about a block from the Melbourne Marriott that rents very nice bikes... a bit more than I care to spend, but nice bike and they seem pretty accomodating.

I might take the rental car and explore the first weekend and rent and ride the second weekend.

If you're exploring with a rental car, go visit either the Great Ocean Road or Wilson's Prom ... take the rental bike in the rental car and you can cycle a bit in either place.

well, I am here... its been a pretty busy week. I managed to run down to bikenow; they rent Tarmac's vaguely similar to my own for a great price. I have been looking at google maps and trying to find a long stretch of "green" with little traffic (out of town). Up north, there is a stretch from Yea to Mansfield that appears to be about 80 kilometers... that should give me my 100 miles (round trip). Its about 100 KM north, so I probably wont get started until about 10 tomorrow.

Since I've been off the bike most of the winter (up in the US), I would expect 6 to 7 hours on the bike, so probably back in time for dinner.

Riding around the bay looks nice but I worry that with all the stops/turns and pedestrians, my speed will suffer too much. Prom looks nice, but I am running out of time and will probably have to try it next trip.

I have my Edge 500... will have a pretty cool upload to Strava soon!

    Thx for all the tips!

Hmm, a lot of our rural and semi-rural roads a very dangerous for cycling, simply because there's very little room of the side of the road, and cars will most likely be doing 100km/h. However, it's been a long time since I've been up there, so I'm not sure about those particular roads.

funny, thats exactly what several people said at the bike shop... "might be fun, but I wouldnt do it..." re-thinking the ride around the east side of the bay.

yup... hate to keep changing plans, but looking very close at the road up in Yea, I think I will do the east side of the bay. I have plenty of room to get 80k+ out and again on the way back, so plenty of room.

I will get started in about an hour (after a good breakfast)... see you all on the trail! I will be in my University of Utah red and white jersey!

Just finished... nearly 7.5 hours... LOTS of wind, but still not a great pace (but keep in mind, its my "winter," I havent been riding much this year).

There was a guy on a mountain bike with (I believe he said) his uncle (maybe 65 to 70 years old) on about a 30 pound steel bike I met when stopping for water at mile 80... I struggled to keep up with them until about 92 and then had to turn off to a different path... FREAKING amazing!

I just wanted you to know... now that I am home... we are expecting pretty solid snowfall on Friday and Saturday... I enjoyed my ride, but it might be a few weeks before I can do it again.
