Coming to Australia (Sunshin coast) and need advice

We will be heading to Australia for a few weeks next March & April and I would like to take a bike. The extra cost to get a bike there means I can only take one. I have road, Cross and a FS MTB. We will be staying between Fraser Island and Noosaville.

If you are familiar with that area what would you bring and where would you ride? Please tell me what you like about it and give me descriptions.

Thanks
Paul AKA "Fred"

Paul, I'm not an expert on the area but after a quick look on Google maps I'm thinking that it would be better to bring your mountain bike. I don't think it would be particularly road bike friendly. The typical Australian roads in such an area are narrow, no shoulder and lots of cars and trucks trying to get somewhere fast. You certainly wouldn't want to be traveling the Bruce Hwy for fun.

Ugh... Just rent a bike... I rented a specialized Tarmac (carbon) rival equipped bike in Melbourne for 60 a day... Probably similar deals all over the country... Worth not having to haul (and damage) my bike... And you could probably rent different types, too.

Umm, what kind of "Cross" bike? Take an off road bike anyway. It looks like there is a lot of bush land to explore although I'm not sure just how hilly it will be. Road biking will be limited without going on the Bruce Highway and while you could do it I don't think it would be fun. Australian Rednecks galore.

Sounds like the roads would not be a good option. I would really like to find some fast flowing single track. I don't mind climbing in fact I prefer it because it means fun downhill. Any good single track in that area?

Paul, I'm not an expert on the area. I've just been looking around on Google maps. If your staying closer to Noosaville then a Road bike may be a viable option. From what I can see there are some HUGE bushland area's around there so an off road bike is likely the pick.

I live not far from the Sunny Coast. There is a lot of bushland to explore - around the Glasshouse Mountains, Ewan Maddock Dam, State Forest fire trails. The hinterland is also popular for road cycling although the roads often don't have shoulders. A popular ride is from Palmwoods (at the foot of the mountains) to Montville (at the top). It's a steep, winding climb but the views are worth the effort.
There are also a lot of on-road cycle lanes around the coast - moreso than most other areas I've seen around South East Queensland. However, I understand there is a reasonable "idiot" factor. ie the drivers are pretty bad and have little tolerance of cyclists. I've never ridden on-road there so I can't comment on this.
I guess it depends on what type of cycling you prefer and whether you have transport to some of the bush tracks.
Cheers

Hi there- I saw that you had recommended that another cyclist rent a bike in Melbourne. Can you send me the name and contact info of the bike shop where you rented your Tarmac? I will be flying into Melbourne and road cycling for a few weeks so that would work well.
Also, do you have any recommended routes from Melbourne up the coast that you could recommend?
Thanks,
Cycling gal

Cycling gal - sorry cannot assist with bike hire, but if you are staying in Melbourne, there are numerous great coastal rides.

Firstly, google 'around the bay in a day' to see 200Km+ of riding around Port Phillip Bay.

Then, you can look at east of Melbourne - Phillip Island / South Gippsland, or west of Melbourne - Bellarine Peninsula, Great Ocean Road, etc.

If you are looking for a long tour 'up the coast' then head east of Melbourne, through Gippsland towards Lakes Entrance.

There are many fantastic areas in which to cycle - enjoy your trip.

cheers

I rented in Melbourne... it was bikeNow (www.bikenow.com.au). I think it was either AU$50 or AU$60 per day (pick up late afternoon, return by late afternoon). They were open Sunday and actually let me return on Sunday morning (I rented Friday evening). I went down around the bay to about Mount Martha and back; around the bay is pretty far and you will need to time it with a ferry ride.

I think I got just over 100 miles and about 4000' of gain... good Saturday adventure. You get to spend a fair amount of time along the beach, which is absolutely beautiful!

edit... be sure and pack a pump or CO2 and injector... and water bottle(s). They can be surprisingly expensive and you don't want to be without.
