Here is my 2011 Magna Rip Curl (bought 6-11-2012). I've done some upgrades on it, wider tires and better saddle, lights, etc. It's now rackless but I made my own frame bag. Has been a reliable work and fun bike for over 1,600 miles now.

I finally finished this. It's a mid '90s Schwinn middleweight cantilever. I spent about ten hours stripping the old off-white powder coat by hand. PITA. Harsh chemicals, steel brushes, putty knife, steel wool, and razor blades.

Cranks, pedals, sprockets, bars, stem, rims and hubs are all now powder coated steel gray with a high gloss clear on top. The frame/fork are powder coated a metallic tomato red. You can't see it in the pics but there is a super fine gold metallic in the red that really punches when the bike is in the sun. I gave her new shoes and upholstery and a nickel plated chain for her rebirth too. I call it the Tomato Krate in homage to the 1968-1973 Sting-Rays.

No, but if you want to find that I'd suggest our friends at thecabe.com for some background and possibly the tank.

Ah, of course. Nicely done, some knobby tires and it would be an awesome off road klunker.

No chance!!! It took me 45 minutes per tire to make those things into 100% treadless slicks.

The '92 had a single top tube? I'd love to see a pic of one of those.

+1. Every SHD I've ever seen was either a 3bar or a canti frame. But, just b/ I never saw one doesn't mean they never made one-- things got nebulous between the Chicago SHDs and the current ones with the 1.125" headtube.... Even the current ones have undergone minor variations with the fork, rear dropouts, chainstays/bridges, and (of course) color schemes. The 80s and early 90s saw SHDs made in several different continents, by several different makers. You can still buy a "knock-off" 3 bar SHD with the 1" headtube as a "Summit Workhorse", made by a firm that produced SHDs in the 80s.

3 bar? Now I am really confused. The only ones I have ever seen, in person or in catalogues, were two bar (straight bar) or 3 bar cantis.

I guess it's just confusing frame nomenclature. In bmx cruiser-speak, your SHD is a "3 bar", where they count the top tube, mid tube, and down tube. Different folks prefer different terminology for these things, but I guess it'd be easier to say that the Chicago Schwinn HDs and the Giant Schwinn HDs were cantilever framed; the rest have a top, mid, and down tube.... I checked out a 92 catalog, and they show this thing: Schwinn catalogs, 1991 - 2000 (61 of 577)

Maybe they made a "HD" version of that?

OK, gotcha on the bar phrasing. Perhaps they were making a canti Heavy Duti in 92 but I can't find it in those catalogues. In fact, I can't find a Heavy Duti, straight or canti, in those catalouges until 1998, where it appears as a straight bar.

They spelled it incorrectly (Duty) in the catalogue.

Schwinn catalogs, 1991 - 2000 (363 of 577)

I've seen TIG'd canti HDs from the late 80s. A lot of mystery in that era, as Schwinn was falling on various levels of "hard times" and changing hands...

One thing is for sure, though: ya gotta spell it with an "i".....

Here's mine. '59 Sonic Flite. All original, save some mechanicals, and repainted by Circle A cycles in Providence. Super comfy and neat to boot!

Huffy Cranbrook, Switched seats with my other bike cause the stem was short and couldn't have it as high as I wanted. Got the mini ape handlebars today. Thinking I might plastic dip it matte black.
