Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

Picked this up the other day from a friend that was going to throw it out for bulk trash, not sure on the year but it is a Murray built Higgins. It is rusty but nothing my sandblast cabinet can't take care of, I found the chainguard decal for it and am thinking a set of modern alloy coaster brake wheels I have.

J.C. Higgins was an entire Sears lineup of products, from bicycles (which replaced the Elgin brand postwar) to sporting goods.
The bicycles are probably the best-remedbered part of the product line.
Some are Murray and I think some are likely H.P. Snyder built (Hawthorne, Rollfast, Hiawatha and others). AMF also made many store brands with a frame like that. The best indicators are probably the fork crown and the chainring, as the crankset may not be stock due to breakage but the chainring tends to be carried on.
My old Western Flyer said M.O.M on the headbadge which I have always figured to mean Murray Ohio Mfg. In fact, Murray did build bike for Western Auto, Sears and JC Penney, among others/
Yes, thecabe.com is a fine place to find out about older bikes and I am a member. Scott McCaskey has a great site.
And NO, not necessarily to compete with Schwinn. SCHWINN didn't even invent that cantilevered middleweight frame design as far as I can tell...ROLLFAST had one at about the same time to the best of my knowledge.
Wikipedia has a pretty good entry on Murray...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murray_(bicycles)
