Can you paint a steel rim

I have a huffy cruiser that I'm refurbishing for my wife and she wanted the rims white to match the sidewalls of the tires. Is it possible to actually paint the rims.

If it uses a coaster brake or drum brakes I would not see any problem with it. If you have rim brakes I would not do it. I would expect problems on the braking surface.

Sand with VERY fine sandpaper, then prime with the proper primer, sand again, then paint the color of your choice.

Is it chromed? If so, you might do a more durable job by just buying an aluminum rim or wheel or a painted steel one.

IMHO it is easier and more durable to change colors on a painted rim than to get paint to stick to chrome, but even if I'm wrong, maybe someone here will have some tips on the right way to paint chrome.

You may chip the paint when you change tires or fix flats, fyi.
