Wife needs a new bike

I am trying to get my wife into cycling and she wants a multi-speed beach cruiser.

She really likes the Schwinn AL3 in Teal but the only place I've seen it is Bert's Bikes

Schwinn Classic AL 3 - Bert's Bikes and Fitness - WNY's Premier Bicycle and Fitness Retailer

Any advice?

I ride a Univega Alpina 604 upgraded to XTR 24 speed. I'd like something that would not frustrate her out of ever wanting to ride with me.

I can see why she wants that bike. It reminds her of being a kid when we could ride all day long and never get tired.
She would be better off with at least 7 speeds if she is going to try to keep up with you. Show her an Electra Townie. It also comes in a woman's version.

Do what I did for my wife. She wanted a Schwinn ladies cruiser in red/white just like the one your wife wants now. I found her one then had a 3 speed hub installed to replace the one speed and a 32 tooth front chain ring to make it super easy to find the right gear instead of the stock 50 tooth factory chain ring. She rides that bike all over town for several years now.

My husband got me a 3 speed Electra Beach Cruiser for my Birthday and I love it. It is comfortable for me to ride and reminds me of the bicycle I had when I was a kid, but the little extra help from the gear speeds helps on the hills in the local park. I've been slowly returning to bicycling for pleasure as the weather allows and this bike has made it all possible. I'm getting a bit old for my racing Schwinn that I loved back in my college days.

I second the Electra Townie. I have one with 21 gears and I just love it!

What kind of riding are the two of you planning to do? Roads? Trails? Commuting? Touring? Fitness? Shopping/cargo? Miles per day? Hills?/
Also, what is the rider ages/weights/fitness levels?

My vote would be for something like the Madone WSD, while you still are on the MTB

I suppose there are a number of factors to choose the perfect bike. The beach cruisers are great for their simplicity, but I think they seem like a monstrosity. Most of my rides are 10+ miles each way, frequently as much as a 40 mile RT, and sometimes longer, and I wouldn't want a wife/GF to have a worse bike than mine. And, I'd have serious problems pedalling a single speed beach cruiser 40+ miles.

Uhh... Ohhh... Struck by another Zombie Thread
